Casualty wins best soap at 2021 BAFTAs
Casualty has won the BAFTA TV Award 2021 for best soap.
The Soaps and Continuing Drama category for 2021 saw Casualty, Coronation Street, EastEnders and Hollyoaks all shortlisted, but with Emmerdale surprisingly not included in the nominees this year.
In a year when the NHS was pushed to breaking point during the COVID-19 pandemic, the well-deserved winners did a pretty incredible job at highlighting how heartbreaking it was on the frontline.
Their special coronavirus-centric episode, their first episode back after a four-month break, showed the pandemic through the eyes of the emergency services and how they cope day-to-day on the wards as the virus spread, which viewers praised.
After the recent announcement that sister show Holby City has been axed by the BBC, the broadcaster confirmed to Digital Spy that Casualty would be staying on air.
The show was launched in 1999 as a spin-off of Casualty, and after 23 seasons, the show will draw to its conclusion in March 2022.

Casualty has some huge storylines coming up, including the return of Leslie Ash, who played Vanessa Lytton on Holby City between 2009 and 2010, for an episode in the summer.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the Casualty team for this episode and stepping back into Vanessa Lytton's shoes," she said in a statement. "It's been a few years since she graced the wards of Holby City hospital and I'm excited for viewers to see what's in store for her."
The Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards aired on BBC One.
