Cat shelter open house, Christmas Bazaar set for Saturday

The fifth annual “Home for the Holidays” open house and Christmas Bazaar will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Friends of Companion Animals, 2532 N. “(The resale shop) will be filled with holiday and Christmas items that are 50% off their last listed price. There will also be a bake sale and dollar raffles for Christmas-centric gift baskets that includes a wine basket generously donated by St. Julian in Dundee,” director Penny Bly said.

A special one-day-only discount will be offered on Dec. 10 for people who ask at checkout. Adopters can get $10 off kittens and $5 off cats over age 1.

Pet supplies also will be accepted all month. Donors will have a chance to win a $25 gift card to Kroger.

“We’re brand specific, which means we only use Purina foods, including a 13-pound bag of Kitten Chow or larger, a case of Purina Fancy Feast Kitten Wet Food, Purina Naturals Original, and Arm and Hammer clumping litter,” Bly said.

Friends of Companion Animals is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization that assists with feline-only adoptions.

"'There’s no place like home for the holidays' applies to cats and kittens in Monroe too. Our goal this season is to find as many loving forever homes as we can for the felines in our care,” director Bly said. “Even for those who might not be looking to adopt, come out to make some purchases at the bazaar. Everything that’s sold goes directly into the cats’ care and upkeep. Plus, these kinds of events hopefully keep us in peoples’ minds, so they let others know about our efforts.”

Bly discourages giving “surprise pets.”

“The ‘surprise’ holiday gift of a pet might seem like a great idea, but it can backfire,” Bly said. “It really should be a family decision. For those people seeking a ‘surprise’ moment, we recommended getting pre-approved, but not telling the kids where you’re going that day. There’s plenty of pleasant surprises when they see all the kitties we have at the rescue, including our free-roaming cat rooms.”
