LANSING — Bus travelers will be able to reach as far as the Delta Crossing development on the west side of town starting May 8, a move that will bring dozens of stores within reach of people who don't have personal vehicles.

The Capital Area Transportation Agency announced Wednesday that it is extending Route 3 west of the Lansing mall, where it currently turns east, a move that will add about 30 stops.

The extension will add stops for a variety of locations, including Horrocks Farm Market, Kroger, the Secretary of State, Lowe's BJ's Wholesale Club and several others.

The route will extend along Saginaw Highway, south on Canal Road, west on St. Joseph Highway, and then turn north onto Marketplace Boulevard before returning to the CATA Transportation Center downtown.

CATA said the extension means all eastbound route stops will see new times to accommodate the lengthier westbound route.

CATA also announced that its Spartan Service, which provides additional bus service during Michigan State University’s fall and spring semesters, will conclude for summer break following MSU’s commencement weekend.

Beginning May 8, all MSU campus service will be suspended, with the exception of Route 32. Service on several off-campus routes will operate at reduced or varied levels over the summer break, which runs through Aug. 27.

Construction scheduled over the summer on Farm Lane, north of Shaw Lane, will impact Routes 18, 20, 22, 24, 26 and 32.  The campus detour will utilize Bogue Street for travel between  Grand River Avenue and Shaw Lane.

Beginning May 11, Route 1 Late-night Service along Grand River and Michigan avenues will return Thursday, Friday and Saturday, operating year-round until 3:35 a.m.
