Editor's Note: Did you catch these 22 at Holland Christian? The Holland Sentinel has released its list of the top athletes from the past 22 years from each school. Read on each athlete below and vote for the top athlete. The top boys and girls vote getters will be announced at the end of the series. Remember, the series is from 2001-2022. Vote in the story on hollandsentinel.com.

Class of 2016

After moving back to Holland, JP Avila made his presence known immediately on the tennis court. He dominated at No. 1 singles to become the first Holland Christian player to ever win the state title at No. 1 singles. Avila went on to play tennis at Boston College.

In a career on the links, Libby Berens might have been the top girls golfer in area history. She was a multiple all-state performer, finishing as high as fourth in the state as an individual. She headed to Ferris State where she was the top golfer for the Bulldogs and played in some LPGA qualifying matches.

Class of 2015

Leading the wave in the pool, Parker Cook-Weeks was a six-time individual state champion, specializing in the distance freestyle events. He was a Division 3 Swimmer of the year before he headed to Queens University to help his team claim the NCAA Division II title in the 800 freestyle relay and as a team overall - twice.

Following in his brother's footsteps, Skyler Cook-Weeks was a multi-state champion in the distance freestyle events and earned Division 3 Swimmer of the Year. He switched his focus to sprints in college and was an All-American and Olympic Trials qualifier.

Class of 2006

A late bloomer on the high school scene, Kirk Cousins had a dominant senior season as quarterback at Holland Christian to earn all-state honors and land a spot at Michigan State, where he started for multiple years. Cousins also played basketball and baseball, but stuck with football and has been a starting QB in the NFL with Washington and Minnesota since graduating from Michigan State, making the Pro Bowl three times.

Class of 2005

After earning all-state honors with a third-place finish in the state in diving, Erica Deur continued to soar to new heights in college. At Calvin, she was a four-time MIAA Diver of the Year and a four-time All-American on both boards, winning the 1-meter NCAA championship twice and a runner-up, plus two runner-up finishes on 3-meter - adding up to a stunning seven-time top-five finisher at nationals, earning NCAA Diver of the Year as a senior.

Class of 2008

One of the most elite runners in area history, Brooke Eilers claimed the state championship in the 3,200 meters as a senior. She was also all-state five times in track and field and had three top-three finishes. Also earned all-state honors in cross country before running at the University of Iowa.

After three years dominating on the soccer pitch, Kirby Eggers was a three-time all-state performer for the Maroons. He was a first-team honoree twice and was the Division 3 Offensive Player of the Year in the state as a senior, also earning Sentinel Player of the Year honors. He will play at Davenport University in the fall.

One of the best two-sport athletes in area history, Kristen Etterbeek was the queen of the court, whether that be the volleyball court or tennis court. She was an all-state volleyball player and a Miss Volleyball of Michigan finalist as a senior, one year after leading the Maroons to the state championship. After earning two all-state volleyball honors, she also was all-state multiple years in tennis, playing No. 1 singles at Holland Christian for a stunning three seasons. She played Division I volleyball at Penn where she was All-Ivy as a senior.

Class of 2019

As an elite runner, Gillian Fiene starred in cross country and track and field at Holland Christian. Fiene won the 1,600-meter state title twice during her career and was all-state in the 800 meters. She also helped the Maroons win multiple relay state titles. Fiene also was all-state in cross country before heading to run at Grand Valley State.

Class of 2014

The most dominant volleyball player in the history of the Holland area, Alyssa Garvelink was a force like no other at the net. At 6-4, she was an elite blocker starting as a sophomore before earning all-state honors as a junior and senior, when she was a Miss Volleyball of Michigan finalist. She also played basketball, but volleyball was her calling as she headed to Michigan State and earned All-American honors twice and represented Team USA.

The versatile swimmer won the state championship in the 500 freestyle after several all-state finishes. Headed to Hope College where he was an All-American three times after winning MIAA titles in the 400 IM all four years at Hope.

Class of 2019

Dominant on the mound, Chris Mokma was tough to beat. He was a three-time all-state pitcher for the Maroons and was the Sentinel Baseball Player of the Year three times. As a freshman, he started and helped the Maroons win the state title. Also played basketball for the Maroons before being drafted by the Miami Marlins. He is currently pitching in the minor leagues.

As a senior, Mike Mokma led the Holland Christian baseball team to its first state championship. He was unbeatable, going 15-0 with a 1.06 ERA. He threw two perfect games and batted .430 as a senior with 43 RBIs. He finished his career with six MHSAA state records before pitching at Michigan State, then signing with the Dodgers. He now pitches in the minor leagues in the Seattle organization.

A stellar two-sport athlete, Hannah Petroelje made her living at the net, whether that be in volleyball or soccer. In volleyball, she was all-state twice and Sentinel Player of the Year twice after leading the Maroons to the state finals two years in a row, finishing runner-up, then winning the state championship. In soccer, she was a two-time all-state goalie and Sentinel Player of the Year twice, making her one of very few athletes to earn Sentinel Player of the Year in twice in two sports.

Ashlee Sall

Class of 2014

Freestyle specialist claimed the Division 3 state championship in the 200 freestyle as a senior, finishing third in the 100 freestyle. She earned all-state honors for two seasons individually and graduated as the school record holder in five events. As a sophomore, helped Maroons win 200 freestyle relay state title before swimming at the Division I level at Liberty University.

One of the grittiest athletes in the area, Kenedy Schoonveld balanced her talent with a scrappiness that allowed her to become an all-state basketball player multiple years, including Sentinel Player of the Year as a senior. She also was a strong volleyball setter, but chose basketball and headed to Hope College where she led the Flying Dutch to an NCAA championship and was named D3 National Player of the Year and recipient of the prestigious Jostens Trophy.

Perhaps the most well-rounded athlete in Holland Christian history, Kyle Steigenga could do it all. He was a first-team all-state wide receiver, setting school records for receiving yards and touchdowns. He was an all-state basketball player and broke the school scoring record. He also earned all-state honors in the high jump, making him a rare three-sport all-state athlete. He chose basketball and went to Cornerstone where he broke the all-time college scoring record in the state of Michigan and was an All-American and National Player of the Year.

One of the best with her feet, Taylor TenHarmsel was an all-state soccer player that directed traffic for the powerhouse Maroons. She was Sentinel Player of the Year as a senior before heading to Calvin, where she was MIAA MVP as a senior after earning All-MIAA all four years. She was an All-American as senior.

Class of 2019

One of the most versatile swimmers in the area, Riley VanMeter was a five-time state champion, starring in the backstroke, butterfly and IM. He broke Division 3 state records in two events before qualifying for USA junior nationals and heading to Alabama to swim in the SEC.

Making her biggest impact on the court, Carissa Verkaik was an all-state basketball player, leading the Maroons to state semifinal and quarterfinal appearances. She graduated as the all-time leading scorer at Holland Christian and was second in the entire state in career shots blocked. She also was an all-state track and field athlete. She headed to Calvin where she was a four-time MIAA MVP and multiple All-American. As a senior, she was national player of the year and won the Jostens Trophy. She is Calvin's all-time leader in points, rebounds and blocked shots. She was third in NCAA Division III history in career blocks and 14th in scoring when she graduated.

Completing one of the most dominant football seasons in state history, AJ Westendorp was the quarterback of the undefeated and state championship team in 2009. He earned all-state honors and dominated in the playoffs, landing a scholarship at Central Michigan, where he switched to tight end.

Class of 2018

The most dominant distance runner in area history, Kayla Windemuller claimed eight state championships during her career. She won one in cross country and five individual titles in track and field in the 1,600 and 3,200. She also helped the Maroons win two relays, leading the team to a state runner-up finish. Headed to Baylor and then the University of Michigan where she was an All-American in the steeplechase.
