Catch 22 Holland High: Vote for top Dutch athletes from 2001-22

Editor's Note: Did you catch these 22 at Holland High? The Holland Sentinel has released its list of the top athletes from the past 22 years from each school. Read below on each athlete and vote for the top athlete. The top boys and girls vote getters will be announced at the end of the series. Remember, the series is from 2001-2022. Perhaps the most dynamic soccer player in Holland history, Daniel Arellano was a supreme playmaker on the pitch for the Los Dutch, leading Holland to the state championship after claiming all-state honors in multiple years. Arellano scored from all over the field but also had the vision to set up teammates for goals, leading to a team of incredible teamwork and chemistry.

Class of 2012

The most dominant swimmer in an era of Holland dominance, Courtney Bartholomew was a five-time individual state champion, claiming three 100 backstroke titles and two in the 200 IM. She led Holland to the most dominant state title in Michigan history as the Dutch finished first or second in every swimming event, including being part of the 200 medley relay that broke the national public schools record. Bartholomew was the second female swimmer in the country to break 52 seconds in the 100 backstroke. She went on to swim at Virginia, earning five NCAA runner-up finishes, and was on Team USA for the Duel in the Pool where she broke the American record in the short-course 100 backstroke and was part of the U.S. world record medley relay.

Class of 2010

Helping usher in the dominant era in Holland swimming, Emily Bos graduated holding the school record in every event. She was a six-time state individual state champion, winning three 100 backstroke titles and once each in the 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. She was on five relay state titles as well. She was the Michigan High School Athlete of the Year by the Detroit Athletic Club and National High School Swimmer of the Year as a senior. Bos qualified for the Olympic trials and became an All-American at Auburn.

Class of 2004

After being edged by powerhouse Ann Arbor Pioneer as a junior, Grant Burtch helped the Dutch earn revenge in one of the best state meets in history as a senior. Burtch won back-to-back 100 breaststroke state title and multiple relay titles before swimming at the University of Michigan where he was an NCAA qualifier and captain of the Wolverines. He qualified for the 2008 Olympic trials.

Lisa Butler

Class of 2007

Leading the swim wave in Holland, Lisa Butler was the first in the long line of state champions at Holland, winning the 50 freestyle as a junior - defeating future three-time Olympian Allison Schmitt head-to-head. Butler also was a three-time state runner up before heading to Purdue where she was an All-American several years for the Boilermakers.

Coreontae DeBerry

Class of 2011

At 6 feet, 10 inches, Coreontae DeBerry is one of the biggest athletes the area has ever seen. He lived up to his size, earning all-state basketball honors at Holland before landing at the University of Cincinnati, where he helped the Bearcats to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, having the best performances of his career during March Madness. He then went on to play professional basketball in several countries in Europe and North America, including the NBA G League.

Adam DeJong

Class of 2006

After earning multiple state runner-up finishes in the pool, Adam DeJong claimed the state championship in the 500 freestyle in a Division 1 record as a senior. He went on to score at the Big Ten Championships for Michigan and was an NCAA qualifier. He went on to qualify for the Olympic Trials, where he finished in the top 25. Also played football at Holland.

One of the top swimmers in the history of the state, Chris DeJong was a three-time high school individual state champion at Holland. He then went to Michigan where he was an All-American all four years. DeJong qualified for three Olympic trials and in 2004 was less than a second away from making the team in the 200 backstroke. He was a member of Team USA for several years.

Class of 2015

The most accomplished swimmer in Holland history, Taylor Garcia was also the most accomplished state champion in the history of the state of Michigan in any sport. She won all eight of her individual races at the state finals during her career, plus six relay titles and three team titles giving her 17 total state championships, a state record. Garcia went on to swim at Arizona, then transferred to the University of Michigan where she became an All-American.

In one of the biggest victories in Holland history, Evan Kobes led the Dutch to the state championship, knocking off powerhouse Ann Arbor Pioneer, as a senior. He claimed back-to-back state titles in the 100 backstroke and was on multiple relay state titles before swimming at Oakland University and then Grand Valley State, where he became an All-American.

Clas of 2010

One of the top athletes in Holland history, Paige Kortman was the diving state champion in Division 1 as a senior before heading to Wayne State where she won multiple NCAA championships in diving and was named to the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame.

This explosive guard was one of the best basketball players in the history of the area. Lake averaged nearly 30 points per game for three years in a row, earning first-team all-state on honors in Class A/Division 1 as a sophomore, junior and senior before playing collegiately at Grand Valley State and Olivet.

Nikolas Leal

Class of 2012

Holland has had a strong wrestling tradition and Nikolas Leal was perhaps the best of the bunch. As a junior, he won the Division 2 state championship at 125 pounds, then moved up to 130 and finished third in the state as a senior, earning all-state honors both seasons.

Class of 2014

In the pool, Cassie Misiewicz was one of the best distance swimmers in the state. She claimed two state championships in the 500 freestyle and was on multiple state champion relays during her career, which helped the Dutch win three state championships in a row. She also qualified for the state track finals as a senior before swimming at Oakland University where she was a Horizon League runner-up in the 400 IM and part of the league champion 800 freestyle relay.

While her sister dominated in the pool, Sadie Misiewicz dominated on the pitch. She was the top soccer player in Holland High School history, earning all-state honors as a sophomore, junior and senior before earning a scholarship to play at Michigan State, where she became a captain. She also played professionally with Grand Rapids FC.

Part of the remarkable swimming wave, Holly Morren was a state champion in the 100 freestyle as a junior, then won the 50 freestyle as a senior. She was also runner-up in both events during her career, leading Holland to three team state championships. Morren headed to Oakland University and became an individual Horizon League champion.

Just like his sister, Jeremiah Morren was a state champion in the 100 freestyle. They became the first pair of siblings to win the same event in the same year in state history. Morren went on to become a Horizon League champion in the 50 freestyle three years in a row, matching the conference record.

After moving to Holland from Iowa, Thomas Rathbun became one of the top swimmers in school history. He claimed the Division 2 state championship in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle three times each before heading back to Iowa to swim collegiately for the Hawkeyes, where he scored at the Big Ten Championships.

Class of 2012

The son of Hope College's longtime defensive coordinator Mike Ricketts, it is no wonder that Nathan Ricketts was a dominant defender on the football field. He was an all-state linebacker and chosen as a Parade All-American after leading Holland to its best season in school history. He went on to play at Central Michigan before landing a couple of NFL tryouts then turning his career to working on pit crews in auto racing.

Class of 2007

One of the best leaders the school has known, Jordan Schrotenboer captained the Dutch to the state championship in swimming in 2007. He won the 100 backstroke and was part of multiple winning relays to lead the way. Schrotenboer then swam at Grand Valley State becoming an All-American. He now is fittingly a college swimming coach.

Class of 2010

The most decorated of all the Holland boys swimmers, Eric Solis won six individual state championships. He was named the Division 2 Boys Swimmer of the Year twice and helped Holland win the team title as a freshman. Solis went on to swim at Florida and then Arizona, qualifying for multiple national and junior national meets, including the Olympic Trials twice.

Class of 2013

The most electric athlete in Holland history, Corey Willis quarterbacked the Dutch to a stunning turnaround and the best season in school history, which included a district title and multiple playoff victories. He was an all-state quarterback who could run and throw and kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Willis was also all-state in track and field despite missing his senior year with a knee injury. He went on to play wide receiver at Central Michigan and is third all-time in TD catches at CMU. He played for the Arizona Cardinals on the practice squad.

Levi Honderd won the state championship in the long jump, was all-state in track and field multiple years and also was all-state twice on the soccer field, using that speed and strength to be a goal-scoring machine. Will run at Ashland.
