Catch 22 poll winners announces for local high schools and Hope

The voting has concluded for the Holland Sentinel Catch 22 series and nearly 250,000 total votes were tallied.

Thanks to the thousands of voters who participated in this summer series.

Below are the results for each school and links back to the 22 finalists.

West Ottawa

For West Ottawa, more than 45,000 votes were tallied with several athletes earning a lot of support.

Wrestler Spencer Nadolsky received 24,299 votes to win the poll. He finished ahead of CJ Van Wieren, who had 17,628 votes, and gymnast Nicole Artz, who finished with 8,000 votes and was the top female vote-getter for the Panthers. Diving state champion Natalie Stitt (700) and swimming state champion Tabahn Afrik (630) rounded out the top five.

Holland High

Holland High School received nearly 7,500 votes and had two clear front-runners.

All-state linebacker Nathan Ricketts topped the poll with 3,165 votes, while soccer all-stater Sadie Misiewicz had 2,157 votes. Wrestler Nikolas Leal (528), soccer star Daniel Arellano (511) and swimmer Cassie Misiewicz (347) topped the poll.

Holland Christian

Holland Christian received 3,382 votes and had a clear winner. Recent graduate Kirby Eggers, a three-time all-state soccer player, earned 2,300 votes to win the poll in a landslide.

All-state girls soccer player Taylor TenHarmsel was second (189), followed by Kirk Cousins (181), Chris Mokma (171) and Mike Mokma (170).

Zeeland East

The Zeeland East Chix saw nearly 13,000 (12,997) voters and had a clear winner with basketball all-state guard Jenna Plewes receiving 9,000 votes.

The Chix, who have put together some of the greatest female athletes in the state over the past two decades, saw the top six vote-getters as female athletes.

Miss Volleyball finalist Sophie Riemersma was second with 1,200 votes, followed by three-sport all-state star Paige Westra (763), discus state champion Taylor Waterway (322), shot put and discus champion Brittany Casey (315) and all-state soccer player Kenzie Fox (213).

Zeeland West

The Zeeland West Dux received 11,386 votes and had two clear favorites in the popular vote.

Football and track all-state speedster Danny Bauder received 6,044 votes to win the poll, followed by track state champion Sam Plaska, who earned 2,732 votes. Rounding out the top five were football stars Jayk Slager (657), Jason Tran (333) and Jordan VanDort (324). Abby Winn (271) was the top female vote-getter and was seventh overall.

Hamilton

The Hamilton Hawkeyes received more than 35,000 votes with several athletes receiving more than a thousand votes.

Soccer and basketball star Bria Schrotenboer won the pool with 11,147 votes, ahead of football-basketball star Dustin Smith (9,105). Wrestler Shawn Pitch received 5,141 votes, followed by diver/sprinter Rayah Blood (3,305) and a tie for fifth with Emily and Molly Oren each receiving 1,881 votes.

Fennville

The Fennville Blackhawks received a stunning 54,762 votes. Their poll also had one of the closest races and a ton of athletes with support.

All-state linebacker Jordan Watkins received 19,889 votes to win the poll. Cross country runner Mary Mendoza got 17,284 to top the female vote-getters. Quarterback Tyler Sessions (4,824) was third, followed by Amber VanWieren (4,500), Matthew Sanchez (3,180) and Stephanie Fuller (2,468).

Wes Leonard was not included in the list per the wishes of the Leonard family, which The Sentinel honored.

Saugatuck

The Saugatuck Trailblazers received 6,713 votes and had some clear favorites.

Pole vault state champion Sydnie Avery won the poll with 2,949 votes, while three-sport star Ana Capotosto also received more than 2,000 votes (2,023). Track star Benny Diaz (612) and distance runners Heather Price (435) and Corey Gorgas (132) rounded out the top five.

Black River

The Black River Rats received a stunning 74,848 votes and had a couple of dominating vote-geters.

Soccer all-stater Brandon Beacham won with a stunning 38,451 votes. Cross country runner Sam Sharnas was second with 21,652 votes, followed by soccer player Abby Frankhouse (7.508), three-sport star Erin Doolittle (3.428) and runner James McCann (1,245), who rounded out the top five.

Hope College

The Catch 22 for Hope College also was part of the series and Hope saw 11,075 total votes.

Basketball national player of the year Carrie Snikkers won the poll with 4,776 votes. All-American swimmer Erika Steele was second with 3,762 votes, followed by track and hoops star Lindsay Lange (1,009), volleyball All-American Jenna Grasmeyer (737), steeplechase national champion Erin Herrmann (265) and volleyball-track star Kara VandeGuchte (144) as women's athletes took the top six spots in the voting. The top male vote-getter was football All-American Matt Rugenstein (109).
