Catch a flick: Outdoor movies showing in Central Florida

Many Central Florida movie theaters remain shuttered and new releases have been delayed amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, drive-in theaters are now finding their time to shine.

Central Florida’s drive-in theaters are showing classics and films of the last several years as Hollywood’s new releases are delayed. Other events are popping up to offer more drive-in flicks for families and friends looking to enjoy a night out while staying safe.

After all, social distancing becomes easy when groups are separated in their own cars.

Here are drive-in movie opportunities in Central Florida.

Epic Theatres, a Central Florida chain, has set up drive-in screens at their Clermont, Mount Dora, St. Augustine and West Volusia locations. Film fans can catch classics such as “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “The Goonies.” Or catch a movie from more recent years including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Iron Man” or one of several “Harry Potter” films. Silver Moon Drive-In is currently showing “Ghostbusters,” “Stripes,” Shrek” and “Megamind” on its Lakeland screens. Tickets are $6 per guests ages 10 and older and $2 for children ages 4-9. Movies show nightly beginning at 8:45 p.m. at 4100 New Tampa Highway in Lakeland. More information: silvermoondrivein.com

Joy-Lan Drive-In, which is under the same ownership as Silver Moon, is now showing “Ghostbusters” and “Hook” at its Dade City facility. Tickets are $6 per guests ages 10 and older and $2 for children ages 4-9. Movies show nightly beginning at 8:45 p.m. at 16414 U.S. 301 in Dade City. More information: joylandrivein.com

Ocala Drive-In is now showing “Beauty and the Beast,” “Iron Man,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Relic” on its two screens. Visitors can now order concessions online for delivery to their vehicle. Tickets are $6 per adult and $3 for children ages 6-12. Movies show nightly starting at 8:40 p.m. at 4850 South Pine Ave. in Ocala. More information: ocaladrivein.info

Waterford Lakes Town Center is showing “Transformers” as their first socially-distanced drive-in movie event. Tickets are $5 per car. Catch the 2007 action movie at 9 p.m. Aug. 7 at 413 North Alafaya Trail in Orlando. More information: waterfordlakestowncenter.com

Drive-In Movie Nights Kissimmee plans to bring pop-up movie nights to Central Florida during weekends beginning Aug. 7. The first movies to show will be “Sonic the Hedgehog,” “Jurassic Park” and “Onward.” Tickets are $30 per car. Movies will show at 9 p.m. Aug. 7-9 at 200 West Vine St. in Kissimmee.
