Catching up with the Bucs from Oct. 31-Nov. 6: Volleyball and basketball results

Here's a look at Florida SouthWestern State College athletics for the week of Oct. 31 to Nov. 6.

Volleyball wins FCSAA State Championship

The Buccaneers, the nation's No. 1 team, continued this year's dominance into the postseason, sweeping their way through the FSCAA tournament and picking up their first conference title in program history despite making two of the last three finals.

On Friday, Florida SouthWestern breezed past No. 17 Eastern Florida, winning 25-13, 25-13, 25-9. Barbara Koekler tallied 9 kills and 9 digs and 7 aces, Adrianna Rossi tacked o 12 digs to the winning effort. The Bucs hit .400 while totaling 11 aces as a team.

In the championship match against rival No. 7 Miami Dade on Saturday, FSW handled business once again winning 25-18, 25-18, 25-17.

Hurricane Ian: FSW's nationally-ranked volleyball team bounced around Florida for 2 weeks after Hurricane Ian

Despite a slow start to the opening set, the Bucs' defense maintained momentum throughout the title bout. FSW tallied 11 blocks and 49 digs, while Miami Dade hit .104 as a team.

Maria Cecilia notched 15 kills and 6 digs, while Koehler had 5 kills and 13 digs. Roberta Purashaj tallied 39 assists and 11 digs as well.

The Bucs improve to 23-1 on the season after the championship win and prepare for the NJCAA National Tournament Selection Show on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Women's Basketball starts 2-0

The Buccaneers began their season with a 69-43 win on Friday in Morristown, Tenn., against Georgia Highlands.

The Bucs' defense held Georgia Highlands to just nine points in the first quarter. Macerena Retamales started her season off strong, picking up 13 points, 5 assists, 5 steals and 1 block while going 4-of-8 from the field.

Blessing King came off the bench and added 12 points and 7 rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting.  Natalia Tondi went 3-of-5 from behind the arc for her 9 points in the winning effort.

On Saturday, FSW defeated No. 2 Shelton State 58-48 behind an efficient shooting night. The Bucs shot 54% as a team and went 6-of-9 from deep while holding Shelton State to 28% shooting. Tondi led the charge from three-point land, going 4-of-6 from behind the arc. She finished with a team-high 16 points and 5 assists.

Men's Basketball wins season opener

The No. 2 Bucs traveled to St. Petersburg to face the Titans in their season opener, winning 66-63.

Fort Myers native Jadrian Tracy had an efficient double-double in his debut as a Buc, tallying 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting along with 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.

Bradley Douglas added 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting in the win, the only other Bucs player to crack double-digit scoring.
