Catching up with the Eagles from Oct. 31-Nov. 7: Soccer, volleyball, tennis, golf results

Here is a roundup of how FGCU athletic teams fared in contests played from Monday, Oct. 31 to Monday, Nov. 7, including weekly awards won by Eagles athletes and a schedule for games being played this week.

Men's Soccer season comes to close

The Eagles' season came to a close on Monday night after a hard-fought double overtime 1-0 loss to Lipscomb in the ASUN Tournament semifinals. FGCU finishes its season (8-5-4, 3-2-3).

The loss closes out a 1-2 week for FGCU, which started with a 6-3 loss at Stetson on Tuesday in their final regular-season game.

Next, the Eagles opened up ASUN tournament play with a 4-0 win over North Florida. Markus Maurer, Aedon Kyra, Davi Alves, and Luke Peperak all found the back of the net for FGCU in the win.

In the semis, the Eagles faced a Bison squad they had beaten 1-0 last Saturday. Lipscomb dominated shots on goal with 18 to FGCU's seven in Monday's win, highlighted by their 11 shots to FGCU's two in the first half of regulation. Luca Naumann scored the game-winner that ended the Eagle's season in the 107th minute.

Volleyball sweeps conference foes

The Eagles hosted three ASUN opponents last week, and finished the home stand with three sweeps.

On Tuesday, FGCU faced Stetson (13-11, 4-8) and won handily 25-15, 25-12, 25-18. The win clinched the Eagles' berth in the ASUN Tournament. Lily Felts tallied 14 kills, 10 digs, and 2 aces while Erin Shomaker tacked on 14 kills and 4 digs.

On Friday, Eastern Kentucky (14-14, 5-8) came to Alico Arena to meet the same fate, losing 27-25, 25-11, 25-15. Felts had 13 kills, 4 digs, and 2 aces. and Chelsey Lockey had 31 assists and 4 aces.

To wrap up the week, FGCU secured its 13th sweep of their season, fifth straight win, and improved to 21-6 after defeating Bellarmine 25-8, 25-22, 25-21.

"Another outstanding defensive effort, which is really proving to be our biggest weapon right now," head coach Matt Botsford said.

Dana Axner highlighted the strong defensive outing with 20 digs, her eighth 20-plus dig performance of the year. Felts and Shomaker notched a double-double. Felts tallied 12 kills and 10 digs, while Shomaker had 10 kills and 12 digs.

Men's Golf finishes second at Daniel Island Intercollegiate

No. 77 FGCU Men's Golf finished second at the Daniel Island Intercollegiate Tuesday to wrap up the fall campaign. Three Eagles finished top 12 or better, all season-best efforts.

Jon Hopkins had a season-best finish by tying for third with a 2-over. Sam Baker finished tied for 8th with a 5-over, and Austin Cherichella earned a season-best finish tying for 12th with a 6-over.

The Eagles entered the clubhouse with a team score of 882, three strokes behind no. 23 Mississippi State.

"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Andrew Danna said. "It was a great effort this week and we came away with a solid result. It was an extremely demanding golf course that required a lot of patience."

Women's Golf finishes sixth at Mercer

The Eagles ended their fall season with a sixth-place finish and a three-round score of 901 at the Mercer Invitational. Posie Farrelly earned a team-best 13th place with a 6-over. No other Eagle placed inside the top 40.

FGCU will return to the links in the spring on February 5-7 at the Lady Bison Classic in Panama City.

Johnson and Damm advance to Bedford Cup Doubles Semifinals

Naples native Magnus Johnson and Max Damm advanced to the Bedford Cup men's tennis semifinals, defeating the top-seeded pair out of FAU, Joao Graca and Finn Stodder, 8-5 in the quarterfinals.

"I'm really proud of this group today," said head coach CJ Weber. "I honestly felt like we were the best competitors out there of all of the teams competing."

Marcelo Sepulveda and Randy Wilson also played in the doubles quarterfinals but fell to No. 3 FAU's Kevin Huempfner and Hunter Robbins, 8-2.
