Koupal plays key role for top-ranked Augie softball

Mitchell alumna Becca Koupal played a major role in Augustana returning to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.

Koupal scored the game-winning run for the top-ranked Vikings in a 2-1 win over No. 17 Minnesota State in the NCAA Central Regional Friday. The defending national champions also had a 3-2 come-from-behind win over No. 19 Southern Arkansas on May 20 and defeated Minnesota State 7-0 to advance Saturday.

Koupal has 12 at-bats and three hits this season, but is primarily used as a pinch runner. She has scored nine runs this season for the defending national champions.

Augustana begins play in the double-elimination tournament against Valdosta State at noon Thursday in Denver, Colorado.
