Catching up with former area athletes: University of South Dakota's Carly Haring soars to best high-jump mark in the Summit League

Apr. 7—University of South Dakota freshman and Mitchell High School graduate Carly Haring cleared an outdoor best of 5 feet, 10 1/4 inches to break the Lillibridge facility record in the high jump at the USD Early Bird on April 3.

The height ranks her second all-time at USD outdoors and is just a half-inch shy of her indoor personal best mark. Haring took sole possession of the Summit lead and moved to ninth in the NCAA.

USD senior and former Dakota Wesleyan University athlete Kamberlyn Lamer leaped 38-9 3/4 to win the triple jump. Her distance ranks third in the Summit this season. She added a third-place finish of 14.26 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

Next on the slate is the South Dakota Challenge scheduled for next Friday and Saturday in Vermillion.

Brewster, SD Mines qualify for RMAC tourney

Mitchell High School graduate Chelsea Brewster and the South Dakota Mines volleyball team recently qualified for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. However, Mines announced the withdrawal from the tournament due to COVID-19 issues announced by the Hardrocker Athletic Dept.

Brewster, a sophomore outside hitter, recorded 69 kills and 119 digs during the spring season. The Hardrockers were set to enter the RMAC tournament as the No. 6 seed and would have faced the No. 3 ranked CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Thursday in a quarterfinal match.

The match will now be declared a no contest following the application of COVID-19 protocols involving the Hardrockers.

The Hardrockers qualified for the playoffs and would have entered the tournament with a 5-9 overall record and 5-7 mark in the conference. This season is also the first time South Dakota Mines would have advanced to the RMAC postseason for the program.

Riggs named equestrian All-American

South Dakota State University sophomore and Hanson High School graduate Isabelle Riggs recently earned National Collegiate Equestrian Association honorable mention All-America honors.

Riggs scored against SMU, Tennessee-Martin, Delaware State and Minnesota-Crookston to secure honorable mention All-America status.

The top four riders per event were selected and named the Ariat First-Team All-America by the NCEA Selection Committee. The next four riders per event earned Second Team honors. Honorable mention honorees were selected via the established criteria below.
