Classic rock cover band Category 5 is promising a high-energy, arena-style show for its performance at the Monroe County Fair.

The Brownstown Township-based band will offer a free concert from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the white entertainment tent at the northeast corner of the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Category 5 debuted at the fair last year.

"This is our second year performing at the Monroe County Fair. We are excited to be back again this year and can’t wait to hit the stage Saturday night,” the band's Kevin Davis said. “Our show is going to be a huge party. We plan on keeping people out of their seats, dancing and partying with us."

Davis plays guitar, keyboard and sings. The five-member band also includes Steve Bramlett, lead vocals; George Koch, bass guitar and vocals; Kevin Minney, lead guitar and vocals; and Ed Navarre, drums and vocals. Category 5 also has two full-time staff members: Michael Hess, stage manager, and Paul Herbon, sound engineer.

“The current lineup of the band has been together since March of 2019. Prior to that, we had member changes from time to time. The current lineup of the band, we feel, is by far the best,” Davis said.

Category 5 began in 2006.

“The show has grown over the years. Original music was part of the early years of the band, from 2006-11. After a few of the original members left the band in 2011, we are now a 100% classic rock cover band," Davis said.

The band’s playlist is vast and includes selections by John Mellencamp, Eddie Money, Collective Soul, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Maroon 5, Boston, Van Halen, Journey, Tom Petty and ZZ Top.

“Our song list covers a wide range of artists from the 1970s through the 2000s,” Davis said.

Audiences enjoy Category 5’s variety of music and its interactions with the crowd, Davis said.

“We have a great time performing, and the crowd feeds off that energy. We get the crowd involved and engaged so everyone has a great time," he said.

Category 5 has performed at the Flat Rock Riverfest, the Allen Park Street Art Fair and the Vintage Market in Monroe. It also performs at weddings and private parties in the metro Detroit area.

"We play several shows a year in Monroe County and throughout southeast Michigan," Davis said. "We hope to continue to grow our following and keep entertaining as many people as we can. Our mantra is 'More People, More Places, More Music.' We set out to bring an arena-style show to any venue we play at. This has been our goal since we started back in 2006."
