Catfish posing as ‘Stranger Things’ star Dacre Montgomery cost woman her marriage and $10K

It’s a strange thing when a catfish ruins your life. That’s what one “Stranger Things” fan says happened when a man, masquerading as star Dacre Montgomery, tricked her into a divorce and out of roughly $10,000.

A Kentucky woman named McKala recounted her tale to the web series “Scamfish,” which aims to verify if a person’s online identity is legitimate.

The YouTube show, which is a sponsored by the online reverse lookup app socialcatfish.com, ultimately identified the faux Montgomery as a “romance scammer” who’d researched McKala and tailored his persona to her interests.

The pair, as McKala recounted, met through a forum for artists, which she used as an outlet for creativity to cope with her unhappy marriage.

Eventually, the stranger claimed to be 28-year-old Montgomery, who played Billy on the Netflix hit.

“Of course I’m suspicious from the get-go, until he starts doing things that make me believe he is who he is,” recalled McKala.

Those things included sharing a “Stranger Things” spoiler — which the “Scamfish” team discovered was leaked months prior — and sending her poetry that mirrored the style of the real Montgomery’s 2020 poetry collection.

During the year and change the pair were talking, the supposed actor ordered McKala to choose between him and her husband, causing her to end the marriage.

He also milked the single mom for thousands, claiming the cash was necessary to ditch model Liv Pollock. The actual Montgomery and his fellow native Aussie have been together since at least 2018.

Mock-Montgomery even fibbed about his lasagna, instead sending her a snap from a Martha Stewart cookbook, as “Scamfish” unearthed.

In a post-script, the series noted it was encouraging McKala to file a police report after the show’s discoveries led her to block the stranger and take an internet hiatus.
