A 27-year-old Cathedral City man died after he crashed into a guardrail on Interstate 10 in Palm Springs on Sunday, the California Highway Patrol said. A 25-year-old woman who was riding in the passenger seat was also injured.

Police are still investigating but suspect alcohol was a factor in the one-car crash.

Carlos Gutierrez was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on the interstate near the Highway 62 exit at around 3:20 a.m. Sunday morning when he lost control and crashed into the metal guardrail, according to a CHP press release.

The car rotated after hitting the guardrail and Gutierrez was ejected onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gutierrez was not wearing a seatbelt. The woman, whose injuries were described in the release as “moderate,” was wearing one.

The crash caused large wooden pieces of the guardrail to be thrown onto the roadway. A second vehicle then crashed into those debris pieces, causing minor injuries to two occupants.
