Cathedral Prep captures District 10 Class 3A boys team golf title

MEADVILLE ― Breckin Taylor arrived at Friday's District 10 boys team golf tournament with some grooming that was radically different than his appearance at the same event a season ago.

The Cathedral Prep junior teed off at The Country Club of Meadville with a notably conservative haircut and some custom-frame glasses.

More important, though, was that Taylor played nothing like he did there a year ago.

That's when the district's 2020 Class 3A individual titlist shot an 84, missed the cut for the second round and saw the Ramblers lose to McDowell in the team event.

This time, Taylor opened with a par-72. Not only was it the lowest first round for any of the district's large-school participants, it also helped the Ramblers topple the rival Trojans.

Prep's top four players Friday combined for a score of 312 to McDowell's 347.

“Last year here was kind of a bad phenomenon,” Taylor said. “My swing, it wasn't where I wanted it to be. It led to too many mistakes and one of those days. This time I struck the ball fairly well and I putted well. The (pin placements) were tough, so I played conservative.”

Trey Thompson's 77 followed Taylor's round on Prep's team championship score sheet. Matt Costa's 80 and Cooper Wierzchowski's 83 were the other contributors to its official score.

Connor Laird (88) was the fifth golfer whom Ramblers' coach Jay Willow started.

Jack Mucha's 85 was the lowest round for McDowell.

Individual play continued Saturday.

Class 2A team

Lakeview, by one stroke, was first after Friday's five-school competition. The top Sailors finished at 340 to Grove City's 341.

Chris Mong's 83 was the best for Lakeview's four most consistent players. Jackson Gadsby followed with an 84, Maddox Bell at 86 and Adam Snyder at 87.

Grove City's Trent Nemec, like Mong, shot an 83.

Fairview, led by Will Fessler's 81, finished third at 350.
