Cathedral Prep girls, McDowell's Kramer dominate Northwest Pennsylvania cross country meet

Most runners with Cathedral Prep's inaugural girls cross country team used to compete for Villa Maria Academy.

Past Victors on the Ramblers' current roster hadn't participated in recent Northwest Pennsylvania Invitational.

Those who ran against them Saturday probably hope they don't return, regardless of their school affiliation.

Prep participants won gold, silver and bronze medals for Saturday's girls varsity race at Harborcreek Community Park. Sarah Clark, Anne-Catherine Brown and Allison Bender were responsible for that sweep by the Ramblers, whose first-place team score of 25 points included Sarah Teed and Helen Ann McCormick, who also placed in the individual top 10.

Clark, a senior, was the race's titlist at 20 minutes, 6.4 seconds. She held off Brown, who completed the 5-kilometer course in 20:11.6.

Clark said the team has more to offer going into this coming Saturday's District 10 competition at Titusville.

“The times (Saturday) weren't showing what our whole team could do,” she said. “Going out together (at the start) was a good idea. Although my time wasn't fast, we all pulled together to have a good race.”

Clark was the district's silver medalist to General McLane's Sydney Bayle for the 2021 Class 2A girls race at Titusville.

The Lancers, with Bayle now a senior, did not participate.

McDowell runner was a pack of one

While Prep runners were prevalent at the top of the girls race, Kamden Kramer's domination was individual.

Kramer, a McDowell sophomore, repeated as the varsity boys victor at 16:28.3. The only drama he experienced was who would be second.

Kramer waited nearly a minute for Fort LeBoeuf's Ben Schrumpf to cross the finish line in 17:21.8.

“I felt like getting out fast from the get-go,” Kramer said. “That set the tone for the race. I felt really good during warm-ups, so I wanted to come out and get a win.”

McDowell (38 points) also won Saturday's team trophy in large part because of Kramer, whose time was significantly faster than a year ago. As a freshman, he finished at 17:02.7 in weather that was opposite of Saturday's ideal conditions at the park.

Kramer, depending on the weather, anticipates he could break the 16-minute barrier at the district meet.

“First and foremost, though, I've got to win,” he said.

Runners to ready themselves for districts

Titusville's Ed Myer Athletic Complex will host the district meet for a third straight fall. The first of six races on Saturday will start at 9:45 a.m.

The top two Class 1A and 2A teams, plus the top 10 individuals not on those teams, will qualify for the PIAA meet Nov. 5 at Hershey.

The first-place teams and top five individuals in the Class 3A boys and girls subregion races also will advance. Those large-school fields will consist of runners from Districts 10, 9 and 8, the last of which is the Pittsburgh City League.
