Cathedral's Jamison wins coach of the year

In his third year as girls cross country coach at Cathedral High School, Greg Jamison was voted Class A coach of the year by the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association.

"Our coaches teach students to work hard, compete, and respect the sport, their coaches, their teammates, and their opponents,” activities director Emmett Keenan said. “Winning is never the purpose — but it is a very enjoyable by-product. Greg is a leading example of that type of approach."

The Crusaders won the Section 5-1A meet last season en route to a second-place finish in the state meet November 5. Cathedral packed five runners into a 1:17.4 spread with an average time of 19:50 but was defeated by Perham, whose top five runners scored just 56 points.

Jamison said his team’s goal is to win the title in 2023.

Jamison has been named section coach of the year every year since taking the program over from Kelly Haws in 2020. Jamison is a St. Cloud State graduate, where he ran track. He has also coached running at St. Cloud Tech and Little Falls high schools. This is his first time winning coach of the year.

In 2021 Cathedral placed fifth in the state meet and in the past two seasons, the team has consistently been ranked in the top five Class A teams by the coaches association. Cathedral finished 13th in the 20-team district meet in 2019, the year prior to Jamison taking the coaching position.

Jamison credits the team's success with the hard work the athletes put in both during the offseason and duringtrack and cross country seasons.

“They've put in like, major hours and they have some high expectations, girls that want to run DI,” he said. “It's a nice crew of people. They're very coachable.”

Part of a young Cathedral cross country team, juniors Ella Voit and Clara Schad placed 11 and 13 in the state meet last year with times of 19:08 and 19:18, respectively. They will be back for the fall season, as will the rest of the varsity team. Eighth grader Katelyn Waldoch, freshman Addie Mondloch and seventh grader Enya Scanlon placed within the top 60 runners of the state meet and Jamison’s daughters, Emma Jamison (10th grade), Lillian Jamison (9th grade) and Cecilia Jamison (7th grade), also run for the Crusaders.
