Doctor Who star Catherine Tate and Shameless actor David Threlfall will appear in The Enfield Haunting, a new play based on one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world.

Tate will play the lead role of Peggy Hodgson, a single mother who's world is turned upside down in the the summer of 1977 when items in her family's home start moving of their own accord.

"They were an ordinary, working-class family, who lived in a North London council house at 284 Green Street, Enfield, but for the next eighteen months became the centre of one of the most famous poltergeist events in the world," reads the synopsis.

Threlfal's character is yet to be confirmed. The play is written by Paul Unwin and based on first-hand accounts of one of the story's ghost hunters.

Tate said she was "thrilled" to be part of the production. "[I] can’t wait to start working with the first-class creative team and the brilliant David Threlfall," she said.

Threlfall similarly shared praise for his co-star, "the amazing Catherine Tate", and expressed his delight at being reunited with the play's director Angus Jackson.
