Catholic sister with ties to Bloomington celebrated for 75 years of service

Sister Laurette Bellamy, a Roman Catholic with ties to Bloomington, is being recognized this summer for 75 years of service to the church.

Sister Laurette ministered in Bloomington as a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society from 2006-14 and as a nursing home visitor at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in 2013-14, according to a report from her religious order at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, near Terre Haute.

“Currently she ministers as a parish volunteer at Saints Francis and Clare Parish, in Greenwood,” according to the report.

Born in Chicago, Sister Laurette became a member of Sisters of Providence and earned a bachelor’s degree in music at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods; a master’s in music from Catholic University of America; and a doctorate in music theory at Indiana University.

Sisters of Providence is a congregation of some 200 women religious who “collaborate with others to create a more just and hope-filled world through prayer, education, service, and advocacy,” the report honoring Sister Laurette said.
