Cats' Fuentes captures win at meet in Amarillo

Sep. 27—AMARILLO — Clovis High junior Sammy Fuentes captured boys individual honors in Saturday's Badger Run cross country meet, hosted by Amarillo College.

Fuentes posted a 3.2-mile time of 17 minutes, 35.28 seconds for the Wildcats, who finished eighth in the nine-team field with 202 points. Frenship took team honors with 34 points, while Dumas was second at 63.

CHS cross country coach Liz Ledezma said was fifth with about 800 meters left, but began passing the leaders at that point and actually won going away.

In girls competition, the Lady Wildcats had just three runners available with some nursing injuries, Ledezma said. Clovis' top runner was sophomore Kira Tree, who was 45th in 25.22.

"They ran well," Ledezma said of her squads in general. "We talked a lot about trying to get ahead of other runners (earlier)."

Clovis returns to the panhandle on Saturday for the Canyon Invitational.

PHS splits soccer matches — At Santa Fe, Portales High's boys posted their second win of the season over Academy for Technology & The Classics on Saturday, posting a 2-0 victory.

Sophomore forward Elijah Tellez put the Rams (4-5) in front in the 10th minute, while senior midfielder Eduar Santos added an insurance tally at the start of the second stanza. Sophomore Mathew Garcia earned the shutout, stopping six shots on goal by ATC (1-7).

In the girls matchup, ATC improved to 6-1-1 with a pair of second-half goals for a 2-0 victory over the Lady Rams (0-7-1).

The Lady Rams were to host Artesia while the boys had a match on tap at Lovington on Tuesday in District 4-4A action. Both PHS squads host Hobbs junior varsity teams on Thursday, starting with the girls match at 3 p.m.
