* Sept. 16: Northwest Angle Buoy Bash, Jerry's Bar and Restaurant, Youngs Bay on Lake of the Woods' Northwest Angle. Paul Menta and his wife, Crystal, of Key West, Florida, are scheduled to be on hand to culminate a fundraising effort for local schools in the northernmost and southernmost communities in the contiguous U.S. united by their buoys.

* July 29-30: REEL'M IN high school fishing tournament, Devils Lake. Each two-person student team fishes with a boat captain. To qualify, students must be involved with a fishing club, organization or their school's fishing team, have fished in a tournament such as the Angler Young Angler series, the Minnesota Fishing Challenge or other charity fund-raising tournaments. Points will be awarded for longest walleyes, white bass, northern pike and perch/crappies. Students on the first-place team each will win $500 scholarships to Lake Region State College in Devils Lake. Second- and third-place teams will be awarded $300 and $200 scholarships, respectively. Rules meeting is July 29, and tournament is July 30; walleye pro, fishing guide and outdoor communicator Johnnie Candle is running the tournament; entry fee $40. More info:

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is continuing its series of hunting, fishing and outdoor learning webinars this summer. The webinars, which are free, begin at noon Wednesdays, and pre-registration is required at

* July 27: Managing your family's lake shoreline. DNR aquatic plant specialist Shane McBride and fisheries landscape coordinator Heather Baird will cover regulations and best practices for lakeshore management.

* Aug. 3: New deer hunting regulations: Todd Froberg, big game program coordinator, will offer updates on deer hunting regs, population numbers and new CWD areas.

* Aug. 10: Hunters as citizen scientists. Learn about two science-based surveys in which hunters contribute data needed to help monitor deer and turkey populations over time.

* Aug. 17: Clay target shooting for beginners. Sheri Brengman, DNR Becoming an Outdoors Woman program volunteer steering committee member and instructor, will talk about trapshooting basics and other clay target games.

* Aug. 24: Early goose season. Dave Trauba, DNR wildlife manager, will discuss early season hunting opportunities for geese and provide tips on how and where to bag the birds.

* Aug. 31: Hunting ammunition options and tips. Kraig Kiger, DNR shooting sports coordinator, will talk about hunting ammo and options for different game, lead alternatives and other tips to consider when buying ammunition.
