‘Cause I, I, I'm in the stars tonight’: BTS’ ‘Dynamite’ to be first K-pop song played in space
BTS’ “Dynamite” is set to become the first K-pop song played in outer space.
South Korea’s space program will be launching its lunar orbiter, the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), on August 1, 2022. Part of the project is to test whether or not a wireless internet environment can be created through space equipment technologies, connecting to satellites or exploration robots without a delay in data exchange between the Earth and the Moon.
KARI is collaborating with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). ETRI has developed technology to help data travel between the Earth and the Moon, amending the usual delays of 1.281 seconds.
According to KARI’s website, “This project taking place under a cooperative system in which the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) oversees the system, main body of the orbiter, and ground station; and Korean universities and research institutes, and NASA support the payloads, deep space communication, and navigation technology.”

“KARI aims to secure deep-space communication technologies such as establishing a large deep-space antenna capable of tracking and communicating with the orbiter to overcome signal sensitivity deterioration due to the distance between the Earth and Moon.”
BTS’ “Dynamite” is intended to be the first song transmitted through KPLO from lunar orbit. KPLO will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 Block 5 booster.
KPLO is expected to reach lunar orbit sometime in January and will collect data as it orbits the Moon for one year.

If “Dynamite” does play in space, BTS will have another historic record to add to their already impressive list of accomplishments this year, including Billboard Awards, Guinness World Records and rocking a four-night show in Vegas.
And while the launch of KPLO won’t be for a while, BTS fans in the meantime can look forward to the group’s upcoming album in June.
