Cause of morning fire at Hopkinton sawmill business is unknown; no one hurt

HOPKINTON — The cause of a quickly controlled fire at a Fruit Street business on Wednesday is not known, a fire official said.

The fire was contained to the attic and roof at J.B. Sawmill & Land Clearing, 36 Fruit St., Fire Chief William Miller said.

Firefighters responded to the business at 6:40 a.m. for a report of a fire. When they arrived, they found flames coming from the attic and the roof over a maintenance garage bay, the chief said.

“Because of that, we went to a ‘working,’ fire,” Miller said.

Hopkinton called backup from Ashland, Milford, Southborough and Westborough to assist with the fire. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Miller said no one was injured and the fire was contained to the attic and roof and did not spread to any of the contents of the garage.

“They (firefighters) did a really good job,” said Miller. “It was a good stop.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Hopkinton Fire Department and the state Fire Marshal’s office.

Miller said he believes the building will still be usable.
