Causeway bridge connecting Miami to Miami Beach was closed for 16 hours due to malfunction

Commuters trying to get from Miami to Miami Beach or vice versa on Friday evening and part of Saturday using the 79th Street Causeway faced traffic headaches.

The causeway bridge was again experiencing a malfunction and stuck in a partially up position, Miami police said. The problem lasted for about 16 hours until the bridge was reopened Saturday morning, according to Miami police spokeswoman Officer Kiara Delva.

As of 7:30 p.m. Friday, traffic was being diverted to the Julia Tuttle Causeway to the south or the Broad Causeway to the north.

Crews worked to fix the problem and reopen the causeway.

A similar issue occurred back in October closing the drawbridge for a few hours
