Cheboygan County Drain Commissioner Cameron Cavitt has emerged as the victor from the Aug. 2 Republican primary election for the 106th House seat.

On Tuesday, Cavitt earned 7,785 votes, which totaled around 46.6 percent of the votes for those within the 106th House district. Geyer Balog of Montmorency County earned 5,595 votes, or 33.5 percent of the votes. Larry Hull of Cheboygan County earned 3,338 votes, or 20 percent total.

"I am grateful the Republican voters of the 106th district have trusted me with their vote and support," said Cavitt. "Our common sense conservative message resonated across the district and I couldn't be more grateful to the voters."

Cavitt said the voters in Cheboygan County came out strong and showed their support for him. He earned 2,610 votes in Cheboygan County, while Hull earned 1,522 and Balog earned 589.

"I am humbled and forever grateful," he said.

The Michigan House of Representative's 106th District encompasses Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties, and a portion of Oscoda County. It also covers almost all of Cheboygan County, except for the area covered by the Mackinaw City Public Schools district, which is in the 107th district.

Cavitt received the majority of the votes in Alcona County, Cheboygan County, Oscoda County and Presque Isle County.

With Cavitt's victory in the primary election, he will move on to face Democratic candidate Marie Fielder on Nov. 8 in the general election.

The winner of the general election will replace current Michigan State Representative Sue Allor, of Wolverine, who is term limited out and is not able to run for reelection. This will be a two-year term.

"We are laser focused on winning in November," said Cavitt.

He said he understands it may be a tough race in November.

"I want to build a strong Northern Caucus," he said.
