Cavs, Guardians, MGM Northfield receive sports betting licenses from state
Three Northeast Ohio entities have been granted sports betting licenses.
MGM Northfield Park, the Cavaliers and Guardians all received the go ahead for sports betting when it begins Jan. 1, 2023.
All three were granted licenses in two categories. “Type A” licenses, which will allow for mobile gambling on sporting events. “Type B” licenses concern in-person betting, which will allow each business to have on-site sportsbooks.
The Cavs announced a deal with Caesars Sportsbook last February to eventually build a facility at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse where they will share the cost of creating a dedicated space. According to reports, it will be located at street level at the intersection of Huron Road and Ontario Street and will be open year-round for those with tickets and those who want to place bets.
Northfield Park, already part of a casino chain, will partner with BetMGM. And the Guardians, according to their Ohio Casino Control Application, will partner with upstart FBG Enterprises for its sportsbook.
With respect to mobile licensing, the Cavs will partner with Fubo Gaming, and the Guardians have selected bet365.
The licenses are good for five years beginning Jan. 1.
The Cavs and Guardians will join the Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds as professional teams who have been given conditional approval in some form. MGM Northfield joins both Northeast Ohio JACK Casino properties that had been approved.
