Aug. 19—Southern Lee was able to hit the field for its first match in the Battle for the Bell Tournament, and got the season and tournament off to a good start with a 4-1 victory over Jack Britt High School.

The game was played at Terry Sanford, but the Cavaliers, who are coming off a 9-1 spring season and four straight conference championships, didn't look like a team that plans on going away just because the schedule got tougher.

Southern got goals from seniors Ronney Delgado and Joshua Garcia, junior Erik Gutierrez, and sophomore Angel Terrones. Sophomore Jose Hernandez assisted on one of the four goals.

Two keepers split time in net, but senior Daniel Diaz had the call for 75 of the 80 minutes, making five saves while allowing just one goal. Freshman Danis Cabrera worked the other five minutes.

Southern returns to action in the tournament tonight at 8 p.m. with a match at Fayetteville Academy. They will finish the tournament on Saturday, but who, where and when the Cavaliers will play has not yet been determined.
