CBS Sports mock draft sends Joey Porter Jr. to AFC North

It’s Senior Bowl week, where we get a chance to take a closer look at some of the key draft prospects for the 2023 draft. Plenty of those players have been featured in mock drafts, while others we will get to know them more as a prospect.

Speaking of mock drafts, we have seen several mocks with Penn State players featured, especially in the first round. The most notable name is cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

The latest mock draft from CBS Sports has Porter Jr. headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the no. 17 overall pick.

Let’s break this one down.

First, Porter Jr. lands with the team his father, Joey Porter, played for. Wouldn’t that be a cool story!

Next, we have said this before. Porter Jr. to the Steelers is quite the “match-made-in-heaven” pick in this draft.

Why? Well, the Steelers need an identity in their cornerback room. Right now, it is a lot of players who haven’t proven they can be a true number one corner on that team.

It’s also worth noting that the Steelers do have some key corners up for new contracts. They extended Arthur Maulet for two years, so he will be up in 2024.

On top of that, their other starting corner, Cameron Sutton, is also up for a new contract in 2023.

The Steelers do also have Levi Wallace, but he is also set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023.

So, the Steelers need to start thinking ahead about the future of their cornerback room.

Bringing in a player as physical and athletic as Porter Jr. would be the perfect piece in the Steelers secondary room with safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

The Steelers have some talented players on their defense and they were ranked in the top half of the league. Bringing in Porter Jr. would only make them stronger.

Porter Jr. would also bolster their pass defense, which will have to face off against players like Amari Cooper, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins twice a year.

Porter Jr. would come in and make an immediate impact on the Steelers defense.

Porter Jr. has improved every year he has stepped on the field at Penn State, and he would give the Steelers a true number one corner that they have needed for quite some time.

We have seen several mock drafts where Porter Jr. doesn’t make it past 20, and this is one of them, to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Another big trait of Porter Jr.’s is his reliability.

According to PFF, in 2022, Porter Jr. played in 275 coverage snaps and allowed zero touchdowns.

Joey Porter Jr. would be the perfect fit for the Steelers.
