A Triton submarine made in Sebastian is among the vessels being used to uncover centuries-old treasures from the Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas Spanish merchant ship that sank off the Bahamas in 1656.

The submersible was shown in the April 16 episode of "CBS Sunday Morning" with Jane Pauley, which featured treasure hunter Carl Allen in his quest to find all the gold, silver and jewels carried by Our Lady of Wonders.

Allen, who bought Walkers Cay in 2018, also bought the Triton sub and a fleet of vessels to search for the lost goods buried in the Atlantic Ocean off Little Bahama Bank. So far, he's found 10,000 artifacts.

Triton Submarines, owned by Patrick Lahey, builds submersibles in Indian River County that have been involved in many high-profile global voyages such as:

Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas

The ship accidentally was rammed by its flagship, then hit a reef and sank within an hour.

The cargo, valued at over $100 million, is rumored to be one of the richest Spanish galleons to go down in the New World. In 1972, a large cannon uncovered by Robert Marx was said to have confirmed those rumors.

Various treasure hunters have found artifacts and sold them at auctions or into private collections, but in 1999 the Bahamian government stopped the treasures from leaving its waters.

Allen, who did not disclose the value of his finds to CBS, displays them in the Allen Exploration’s Bahama Maritime Museum he built and opened in Freeport, Grand Bahama, in 2022.
