CCBOE names Elizabeth Watwood new Hanceville Middle School principal

Nov. 13—Hanceville Middle School students will have a new principal after returning to school from Christmas break after the Cullman County Board of Education's approval of Elizabeth Watwood as the replacement for Dr. Kellie Tanner.

Although Watwood's title may be new, she has been a familiar face in the hallways of Hanceville schools. As a Hanceville alumni, she returned to her alma mater as a middle school math teacher and is currently serving as the Hanceville High School Assistant Principal.

Watwood has also worked as a middle school teacher for Hartselle Schools and as assistant principal of Holly Pond K-8.

With Tanner set to step into her role as the district's School Improvement/EL Coordinator, the board named Watwood as her successor Thursday, Nov. 9.

"She [Watwood] has done an excellent job as both a teacher and an administrator and we are excited to have her on-board as a principal," Superintendent Shane Barnette said.

"I am so excited and blessed to have the opportunity to serve in this role at Hanceville Middle School," Watwood said in a release emailed to The Times. "I look forward to working with the students, staff and community to make Hanceville Middle the best it can be. Hanceville is my home, and both of my children attend Hanceville schools. I would like to thank Dr. Barnette, Mr. Brockman, and the the entire board for trusting me with this opportunity."

Watwood is scheduled to take over as principal on Jan. 2, 2024.
