CCBOE sets 2023-2024 budget

Sep. 19—The Cullman County Board of Education approved its 2023-2024 budget after holding the second public hearing, which came with several additional allocations during the original budget presentation at last month's board meeting.

Chief School Financial Officer Suzy Berryman noted several allocations which had been approved since her first presentation in August, adding roughly $3 million to the CCBOE's general fund account.

"Our general fund revenue is $103 million. That's up a little from the last time when I think it was just over $100 million. The difference is a few extra allocations I got in after the last budget hearing so I went back and added those along with the expenses that went with them," Berryman said.

The general fund account is one of five designations for funding, along with special revenues, debt services, capital projects and fiduciary trust. According to Berryman, the general fund contains the most significant amount of unrestricted funds and is used primarily for operational expenses. The funds total planned expenditures come in just under $100 million with the lion's share of $61.8 million being earmarked for employee salaries, another $21 million providing additional employee benefits, $10.6 million is set to fund purchased services and $5.5 million for materials/supplies.

Of the general fund's total amount, $74.7 million is derived from state allocated funding, with an additional $29 million from federal sources.
