CCS HOOPS: Berea picks up big road win; Lady Mountaineers suffer first league loss

The Berea College basketball teams split a doubleheader with Collegiate Conference of the South rival LaGrange College on Friday in Georgia.

The Mountaineers (13-9, 5-4 CCS) earned an 80-73 win, while the Lady Mountaineers (20-2, 12-1) suffered their first league of the season, 74-59.

Both teams are set to return to action today at Piedmont College.

MEN

Isaac Caudill had 23 points, five rebounds and four assists as the Mountaineers secured a winning season with a solid win on the road over LaGrange College (15-8, 7-3).

The Mountaineers shot 56.6 percent from the field, hit 12-of-21 three-pointers and were 8-of-9 at the free throw line.

Trey Minter had 16 points for Berea College. Jarel Montgomery had 13 points, while Marquis Mackey and Bryce Riley had 10 points each.

Berea trailed by five points at halftime, but surged ahead by as much as 10 points in the second.

WOMEN

The Lady Mountaineers fell behind early Friday on the road — and they were never really able to recover.

Aaliyah Hampton had 27 points and five rebounds as Berea College suffered its first-ever CCS setback. Dailyn Spalding, Drea Satori and Destiny Combs had seven points each for the Lady Mountaineers.

LaGrange led 18-15 after the first quarter and took a 29-26 advantage into halftime.

The Panthers out-scored Berea 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mountaineers shot 40 percent from the field, including 1-of-8 from three-point range, and hit 18-of-29 free throws.

Jayden Merriweather had four points and LynKaylah James had three points.
