CCU quarterback Grayson McCall is not cleared to play against Marshall University

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is currently not cleared to play against Marshall University.

CCU Head Coach Tim Beck made the announcement at CCU’s midweek press conference and said McCall was highly doubtful and the team and medical staff would know more at the end of the week.

“It’s his life,” Beck said. “Let him and his family come to grips with that and make decisions with the medical staff on what is the next thing to do, and we are behind him 100 percent.”

Beck added quarterback Jarrett Guest is preparing to start, and other backups Ethan Vasko and Blake Boda are also prepping. Beck stressed that McCall’s health was a high priority for the team.

“(McCall) has good days and bad days; he’s upbeat; his health is the number one concern for Coastal Carolina,” Beck said. “Could that have been his last play at Coastal? Maybe ... I don’t know that, but we’ll have to see that and get a good feel of that as he continues to progress in his treatment and rehabilitation.”

McCall exited CCU’s Oct. 21 win against Arkansas State after taking a hit to the head while sliding with the football. McCall ultimately left the field on a stretcher and was taken to a local hospital before being released and returning home, according to an October 22 statement by the university.

Beck said McCall was doubtful to play Monday, although added McCall did not suffer a concussion following the hit, according to ESPN.

Beck also gave an update on two other key CCU players who left the Arkansas State game with injuries. Wide receiver Jared Brown will play, but running back Braydon Bennett is still under evaluation and will be a game-time decision.

CCU faces the Marshall Thundering Herd at home in Conway Saturday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. EST.
