CDC: Papa Murphy's cookie dough linked to 18 cases of Salmonella, including one in MO

A Salmonella outbreak has sickened 18 people, including one person in Missouri, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak has been linked to raw cookie dough sold by pizza chain Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake Pizza. The majority of the cases are in Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

People in six states have been affected, though the CDC cautions that the true number of sick people is probably higher than the number reported, due to the fact that some people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.

Consumers should throw out any Papa Murphy's chocolate chip cookie dough or s'mores bar dough they might have in their fridge or freezer, and wash items and surfaces the dough touched with hot soapy water, according to the CDC. Springfield has three Papa Murphy's locations.

Papa Murphy's has temporarily stopped selling their raw chocolate chip cookie dough and raw s'mores bars dough based on information that nine sick people reported eating raw cookie dough from there the week before they got sick. Neither the chocolate chip cookie dough nor the s'mores bars dough is meant to be eaten raw. Raw doughs contain unpasteurized eggs or raw flour and can carry bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli.

According to the CDC, most people infected with Salmonella experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually start six hours to six days after ingesting the bacteria, and most people recover without treatment after four to seven days. However, some people may experience more severe illnesses and may require hospitalization.

If you have severe Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea and a fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit, diarrhea for three days that is not improving, bloody diarrhea, so much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down or signs of dehydration, contact a health care provider.
