Monroe County averaging more than 700 new COVID cases per day. The latest

The 7-day rolling average for new COVID-19 cases in Monroe County continues to rise, according to the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

According to the county's COVID-19 dashboard, which is updated on weekdays, the 7-day rolling average for new COVID cases rose to 708 on Thursday.

Also, 807 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Thursday.

New COVID cases surpass 1,000 in a day in Monroe County NY

New cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Monroe County, according to the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

According to the county's COVID-19 dashboard, which is updated on weekdays, 1,028 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Tuesday. The figure is more than twice as many new cases — a 115% increase — over the 479 new cases were reported just one day earlier.

The last time the number of new COVID cases in Monroe County surpassed 1,000 in a day was in late January.

The new 7-day rolling average is 671 new cases per day.

COVID hospitalizations jump in Monroe County NY

A 62% increase in COVID-19 related hospitalizations in Monroe County was reported this week by the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

The latest data shows 296 people hospitalized due to COVID-19, a steep increase from the 183 patients hospitalized on April 18. Twenty-four of the latest hospitalized patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, which is a 41% increase over the April 18 data, when 17 people were in the ICU.

However, this week's increase in new COVID-19 cases within Monroe County is slight compared to the surges reported in recent weeks. A 5.8% increase in new cases was measured in the past week. In all, 4,419 new COVID-19 cases were reported since April 18, bumping the 7-day rolling average to 631 new cases per day.

Also since April 18, one new death was reported, bringing the total of COVID-19 related deaths to 1,830.

CDC urges masks in Monroe County NY due to rising COVID levels

Monroe County last week was moved to the "high" COVID-19 community level by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, due to its rising positivity rates.

In turn, people in Monroe County should be wearing a mask in public indoor settings, according to the CDC.

A county's COVID-19 community level is determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area.

As of Friday, the Monroe County Department of Public Health listed a 7-day rolling average of new COVID-19 cases at 547.

The latest hospitalization data from the Department of Public Health, shows 183 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 on April 18, which was an increase from the 166 patients on April 11. Seventeen of the hospitalized patients are in the ICU, which is a 19% decrease over the April 11 data.

As of Sunday, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Steuben and Wayne counties were all listed to have high COVID-19 community levels. Genesee and Livingston counties were listed under the "medium" COVID-19 community levels.

Under the mid-level, anyone with a high risk for severe illness should consult a healthcare provider about wearing a mask, as well as what other precautions to take.

  • Monroe County reported 2,615 cases and four deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 1,690 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 157,474 cases and 1,560 deaths.

  • Ontario County reported 408 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 238 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 20,769 cases and 176 deaths.

  • Wayne County reported 274 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 158 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 17,817 cases and 174 deaths.

  • Livingston County reported 138 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 82 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,916 cases and 116 deaths.

  • Orleans County reported 99 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 55 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,790 cases and 113 deaths.

  • Genesee County reported 168 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 64 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 13,929 cases and 185 deaths.

COVID cases in New York

New coronavirus cases leaped in New York in the week ending Sunday, rising 36.8% as 49,500 cases were reported. The previous week had 36,180 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

New York ranked second among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 57.1% from the week before, with 351,599 cases reported. With 5.84% of the country's population, New York had 14.08% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 42 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

COVID outbreaks in New York

Within New York, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Oneida County with 491 cases per 100,000 per week; Oswego County with 487; and Tompkins County with 465. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were New York County, with 5,618 cases; Kings County, with 4,948 cases; and Queens County, with 4,620. Weekly case counts rose in 61 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Queens, Erie and Monroe counties.

New York ranked 7th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 90.1% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.5%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, New York reported administering another 193,193 vaccine doses, including 25,351 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 245,669 vaccine doses, including 28,283 first doses. In all, New York reported it has administered 39,087,707 total doses.

In New York, 117 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 59 people were reported dead.

A total of 5,123,612 people in New York have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 68,231 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 80,984,914 people have tested positive and 991,254 people have died.

Hospitals in 37 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 25 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 42 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
