Poll results: Horseshoe Volleyball team selected as CDT Girls Athlete of the Week

A Horseshoe Volleyball team is the girls athlete of the week for Jan. 23-29, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.

The 16-White Horseshoe Volleyball team won gold at the 16U tournament at Nittany Valley Sports Centre on Jan. 28. The team played nine of the 12 teams at the tournament and didn’t lose one set.

Seven of the 10 girls that play for the Horseshoe Volleyball team are from Bald Eagle with two other girls from Juniata Valley and one from Mifflintown. Bald Eagle alumni Grace Hugar and Madison Rockey coach the team.

The team had 51% of the vote in the poll, 12,476 votes.

Here were the other nominees:

Ann-Marie McMurtrie, Penns Valley girls basketball: McMurtrie led her team in scoring in three consecutive games during the week of Jan. 23. She started with 18 points against Bellefonte in a 60-50 win. Then she had 16 points in a 55-39 victory over Bald Eagle on Jan. 26 and 18 points once more against Juniata on Jan. 28 in a 63-34 win. She came in second in the poll, with 35% of the vote (8,416 votes).

Aubrey Yartz, Saint Joseph’s Catholic girls basketball: Yartz is fourth in scoring in the Tri Valley Athletic Association with 12.22 points per game. The first-year Lady Wolfpack star is fourth in rebounds with 93 total and fourth in blocked shots with 24.

Jordyn Steindl, State College girls basketball: Steindl scored 19 points in a battle with Cumberland Valley’s Jillian Jekot, who scored 23 on Jan. 25. The Lady Little Lions lost 59-53.

Julia Emel, Penns Valley girls basketball: Emel began her week with a 15-point performance against Bellefonte in a 60-50 win on Jan. 23. The senior followed up with 10 points in a 55-39 win over Bald Eagle on Jan. 26 and 11 points in a 63-34 victory against Juniata on Jan. 28.

Maria Cotter, Bellefonte girls basketball: Cotter had 17 points in Bellefonte’s 60-50 loss to Penns Valley on Jan. 23.

State College cheerleading: The State High Varsity Cheerleaders placed fifth in Pennsylvania out of 16 teams at the PIAA State Cheerleading Championship.

State College girls swimming: Jade Castro, Madison Watschke, Ally Koehle and Molly Workman broke a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle relay and Workman broke the girls 50-yard freestyle pool record on Jan. 25.

Taylor Brown, Bellefonte girls basketball: The sophomore forward finished with 14 points in a 60-50 loss to the Lady Rams on Jan. 23.
