Cedar City residents should get a chance Tuesday to learn more about the candidates vying for spots on the city council.

Southern Utah University is hosting a debate inside the Church Auditorium in the university's Sharwan Smith Center starting at 6 p.m., with invites out to all six of the candidates running for three open seats on the council: Robert Cox, Brittany Fisher, Kathy Long, Tyler Melling, Mark Mumford and Carter Wilkey.

The three winners of this year's race will make up a majority on the five-member council, and changes are coming with only one incumbent (Melling) left in the race. The six candidates made the ballot by making it through the primary election on Sept. 5.

SUU's Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service is hosting the debate.

An informal meet-and-greet is slated to precede the debate, with residents invited to come meet candidates in-person starting at 5:30 p.m. From there, all six will move over to the debate state, with the event scheduled to last until 7:30 p.m.

Admittance is free, and the public is encouraged to attend. For those who can't make it, SUU is planning to stream the event live on the Leavitt Center's Facebook page, @leavittcenter.

Election Day is Nov. 21 this year, with the date having moved back from the traditional first week of November in order to make room for a special congressional election. However, most voters should receive their ballots in the mail weeks ahead of time.
