Cedar Point to add new coaster to reimagined 'Boardwalk' area along Lake Erie shoreline

Cedar Point is adding its 18th roller coaster for the 2023 season.

The Sandusky park announced Thursday morning that in a nod to its past, it will add a classic Wild Mouse coaster and create a new classic Boardwalk section in the park.

The announcement of plans for new Boardwalk area of the park was made on YouTube with thousands of viewers awaiting news of the new section along Lake Erie near the GateKeeper roller coaster.

Cedar Point opened up some valuable real estate with the removal of the Wicked Twister roller coaster in the off season along with removal of a stadium that once was home to aquatics and stunt shows and even an aquarium at one time.

This reimagined coaster of yesterday coming in 2023 will have spinning cars.

Park spokesman Tony Clark said no two rides on the new Wild Mouse will be alike as the spinning motion of the cars will be dictated by the number of passengers aboard each one and how much the passengers weigh.

The roller coaster will feature seven cars that spin 360 degrees as it navigates 1,312 feet of dipping and twisting orange track.

The new Wild Mouse roller coaster will reach a height of 52 feet and boast six mouse themed cars and one that is cheese themed.

Manufactured by Zamperla, riders must be 48 inches tall to ride or 42 inches tall to ride with a supervising companion.

The park's old Wild Mouse coaster was removed in 2011 to make way for an outdoor stage near the Valravn roller coaster.

Grand Pavilion offers views of Lake Erie

The park is also adding a so-called Grand Pavilion behind its signature Giant Wheel attraction that is similar to the park's original Grand Pavilion entertainment space that debuted in 1888.

Clark said the bi-level complex will be home to a new restaurant that will offer both indoor and outdoor seating with views of Lake Erie.

There will also be a bar that overlooks the lake.

Clark said the restaurant menu will feature items not found elsewhere in the park along with some traditional Cedar Point favorites.

The park also announced that it is renaming its Lakeside Midway to The Boardwalk.

In addition to the new Wild Mouse roller coaster and Grand Pavilion, the newly named section will be the home to two relocated rides from elsewhere in the park.

The Matterhorn and Scrambler are being relocated to the new section.

Clark said the Scrambler will get a new paint job and a new name - the Atomic Scrambler.

The Tiki Twirl spinning ride that is already located in this area of the park will also get some love in the off season and will be will renamed after a former park classic - the Calypso.

Clark said construction is already underway on the new amenities so they will be ready to debut at the start of the 2023 season.

“The Boardwalk is our vision of what the classic Cedar Point Boardwalk would have felt like long ago: the sights, the sounds, the electricity of the experience – this new area captures it all,” said Carrie Boldman, vice president and general manager of Cedar Point, in a statement. “Lakeside attractions have always been a part of Cedar Point’s 153-year history, and that tradition lives on.”
