Cedar Point retiring Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster

Cedar Point is retiring its popular Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster, the park announced on Tuesday.

“After 19 seasons in operation with 18 million riders experiencing the world’s first strata coaster, Top Thrill Dragster, as you know it, is being retired,” the park said in a statement.

Cedar Point said their team is working on creating a “new and reimagined ride experience” and will share more details at a later date.

The ride has been shut down since August 2021 after a woman was injured while waiting in line.

Ohio Department of Agriculture officials said in a release that the woman who was struck by an object from the Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster was hit in the head by a bracket the size of the average adult male’s hand.

Following a six-month investigation, ODA cleared Cedar Point of any legal wrongdoing in the accident, according to our news partners at WBNS in Columbus.

According to the department, they conducted a post-accident inspection of the ride, interviewed Cedar Point staff, and reviewed thousands of pages of maintenance records, witness reports and lab reporting, WBNS reported. ODA said it “could not establish the levels of necessary proof” to bring any charges, the station reported.

Despite the findings, the ride remained closed for the 2022 season.
