The Great British Bake Off star Adele Roberts has revealed that she was going through chemotherapy to combat her own cancer while she took part in the Stand Up to Cancer special.

Roberts appeared on April 2's edition of the Bake Off special alongside Tom Daley, Lucy Beaumont and David Morrissey, who won. Roberts, who is a radio presenter, confirmed in October 2021 that she had been diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer.

Later, she had surgery to remove the tumour and began using a stoma bag. She revealed in June last year that she was officially cancer-free. But she confirmed in a tweet to a fan that she was undergoing chemotherapy while working on the Bake Off special.

"Thank you so much Ryan! I was actually on chemo in the tent. I was overheating most of the time. I had an ice machine to keep me cool," Roberts wrote.

"I also can’t remember most of this. I know I had an amazing day... but watching it back now is so special #GBBO."

Roberts also spoke about her experience with cancer while on the show, saying: "I have absolutely loved the past couple of days. I am so thrilled to be here. In October last year, I was diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer. And this is the first big challenge I’ve really taken on since I finished chemotherapy."

She continued: "I've also recently found out that I'm cancer-free and so it's even more special doing an amazing show like this because I know that it does actually help save lives."

Roberts came close to winning the special after wowing Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith with her popcorn bucket cake. But she was pipped to the post by The Walking Dead and Britannia actor Morrissey, who became the third Bake Off special winner this year following David Schwimmer and Jessica Hynes.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, and streams on Netflix.
