Celebrate the 4th of July holiday week with the return of Sailfest and concerts from The Roots to Maren Morris

There’s a lot of American-rooted entertainment surrounding Independence Day outside of the normal fireworks displays this year.

The Roots, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Maren Morris, plus members of the Grateful Dead and an orchestral tribute to Woodstock all play in Connecticut venues this week.

Sailfest returns to the streets on the Thames River waterfront the New London after a two-year COVID hiatus with carnival rides, more than 200 vendors, a road race, live music and, yes, fireworks.

Finally, a generous nation that we are, we have also made room for Australian pop stars 5 Seconds of Summer, a tribute to French torch singer Edith Piaf and a musical about an amnesiac member of the Russian royal family.

Dead & Company

Xfinity Theater, 61 Savitt Way, Hartford

Last week Grateful Dead bassists Phil Lesh played Bridgeport. This week the Dead & Company ensemble of Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir along with longstanding collaborators such as Connecticut-raised pop star John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, is at the Xfinity Theater in Hartford, July 5 at 8 p.m. $31-$810. concerts.livenation.com.

Tedeschi Trucks Band

Westville Music Bowl, 45 Yale Ave., New Haven

The Tedeschi Trucks Band Wheels of Soul Tour doesn’t just spotlight its headlining guitar-driven rock outfit. The opening acts are no less than Los Lobos and pop singer/songwriter Gabe Dixon on July 6 at 6 p.m. at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven. That’s the same venue where Tedeschi Trucks would’ve been the first band to play, had the grand opening not been rescheduled due to COVID. $19-$300. westvillemusicbowl.com.

Fiona Davis

Mark Twain House and Museum, 351 Farmington Ave., Hartford

Does a book count as a beach read if it’s set inside a century-old mansion/museum in New York City? If it’s Fiona Davis’ new novel “The Magnolia Palace,” sure. Davis regularly writes about vivacious young women, their dreams, their work, their environment (in this case the imposing Frick Mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side) and their place in American history. Davis has an in-person appearance on July 7 at 7 p.m. at the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford. 5 Seconds of Summer

With a band name like that, 5 Seconds of Summer could tour every July they want to. The Australian pop stars are bringing along the British dream-pop band Pale Waves for their Take My Hand World Tour, July 8 at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. $41 and $51. mohegansun.com.

The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook

After a December postponement due to COVID, Broadway star Christine Andreas finally brings her tribute to French pop stylist Edith Piaf to The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, July 8 at 8 p.m.. $38. katharinehepburntheater.org.

Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Summer of ‘69′

Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center, 22 Iron Horse Blvd., Simsbury

You’d be excused for thinking Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s “Summer of ‘69″ show might be a tribute to Bryan Adams. In this case, though, “’69″ is shorthand for the Woodstock festival, with the orchestra playing the works of The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and Jimi Hendrix. It’s part of the HSO’s Talcott Mountain Music Festival series on July 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center. $27-$50. https://hartfordsymphony.org/concerts/summer-of-69/.

‘Anastasia’

Foxwoods Resort Casino, 350 Trolley Line Blvd., Mashantucket

The musical “Anastasia” is based on the animated film from 1997, with some key changes such as no talking bat and no Rasputin. It also gets some of its story from an earlier live-action film starring Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner. The musical had its world premiere at Hartford Stage in 2016 and has returned to the state numerous times on tour. Now it’s spending a weekend at the Great Cedar Showroom in the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket. July 8 at 8 p.m., July 9 at 2 and 8 p.m. and July 10 at noon and 6 p.m. $45-$75. foxwoods.com.

Sailfest

5 Waterfront Park, New London

Sailfest hoists its sails July 8-10 along Bank Street in New London. The fireworks are Saturday night at 9 p.m. There’s live music from 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Of course, there are also a lot of boats. https://sailfest.org/.
