Celebrate 80 years of women in flight, and more this week

SWEETWATER — The National WASP WWII Museum kick off its 80th anniversary celebration Friday with a ball and dinner starting at 6 p.m. in Hangar 2 at Avenger Field, with patrons invited to dress in 1940s-inspired formal wear.

Celebrations will continue with a fly-in from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Avenger Field, welcoming all pilots and aircraft. Events include reenactments, meet the pilots, an authors' hour and children's activities.

Superhero Fun Run

Big Country CASA will present its annual annual Superhero 5K Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Williams Performing Arts Center at Abilene Christian University, with runners encouraged to dress in costume.

'The Sandlot'

As part of the Family Film Series, a showing of "The Sandlot," rated PG, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Paramount Theatre, 352 Cypress St.

Zoobilation

The annual Zoobilation dinner benefiting the Abilene Zoological Society will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Abilene Zoo, with a theme of "The Roaring 20's." A bar will be open, and encounters with animals including a kangaroo, red-tailed boa and two-toed sloth will be available.

'The Little Mermaid'

As part of the Children's Performing Arts Series, Panto Company USA will present a stage production of "The Little Mermaid" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Paramount Theatre, 352 Cypress St.

Tales of Abilene history

Historian Jay Moore will present "Abilene in the '20s and '30s: Little Known Tales of Our Hometown" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Paramount Theatre, 352 Cypress St.

Sci-fi films

The Paramount Theatre will kick off a science fiction weekend with a showing of "The Fifth Element" at 7:30 p.m. May 6, followed by the 2021 version of "Dune" at 7:30 p.m. May 7.

Philharmonic concert

The Abilene Philharmonic will present its "Masterworks IV" concert, featuring Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," at 7:30 p.m. May 7 at the Abilene Convention Center, 1100 N. Sixth St., with guest artist Faith Fang, an ATEMS graduate, performing on the violin.

Salvation Army fundraiser

The Salvation Army will present its "Doing the Most Good" fundraiser event, featuring NFL hall-of-famer Drew Pearson, at 7 p.m. May 10 at 201 Mesquite Event Center, 201 Mesquite St.
