Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the following events in the Rockford area

ROCKFORD — Cinco de Mayo, a traditional celebration that commemorates the May 5, 1862, victory of the Mexican Army over French forces, will be celebrated at several places in the Rockford area this week.

Here is a list of events celebrating the holiday:

All-ages Celebration

About: An all-ages event that will provide music, drinks, and food provided by Mel's Shells.

When: 5 p.m. Thursday

Where: 730 N. Church St., Rockford

La Piedra Promotions at Union Rockford

About: This Cinco de Mayo celebration will provide food, a live DJ, and two different live bands.

When: 7 p.m. Thursday

Where: 112 N. 2nd St., Rockford

Party at Jack's Hookah Cigar Lounge

About: Jack's Hookah Cigar Lounge is offering free tacos during the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

When: 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday

Cost: $5 cover

Jeeps and Tacos

About: Alonso Kling and Stuff to do in Rockford hosts Screw City Jeeps first Cinco de Mayo with Mexican crafts, deejay, Mexican treats. Guanajuato restaurant is selling tacos in the parking lot. West side of lot is reserved for Jeeps.

When: 4 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday

Cinco de Rockford

What: An all-ages celebration of Cinco de Mayo will be held in the parking lot next to Don Carter Lanes.

When: 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday

Where: 3923 E State St., Rockford

About: The celebration will include food vendors such as Sabores Mobile Kitchen, Tacos Don Chato, WehPah Food Truck, and Second Act Sweets. There will also be art-inspired activities, live music, and a jalapeño eating contest at 4:30 p.m.
