Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with food and drink specials: Fall River Eats

It's the first week of May, and for local foodies that means it's time to taco ‘bout a time-honored tradition: Cinco de Mayo.

The holiday marks the Mexican army's pivotal defeat of the French army at the Battle of Puebla, during the Franco-Mexican War on May 5, 1862.

Today, it brings together lovers of Latin culture for a day filled with Mexican fare, music, fun and many margaritas.

Looking to get in on the fiesta? Here are some Fall River area restaurants serving up some Cinco de Mayo food and drink deals and special events:

Barrett's Alehouse (Fall River)

There will be tacos, tequila and good times at Barrett's Fall River this Friday. Stop in on Cinco de Mayo for a delicious feast of signature Mexican dishes and drinks. Some fiesta go-tos you'll find on the menu: fish tacos, Buffalo tacos (Buffalo fried chicken tenders, lettuce, tomatoes and blue cheese dressing), BBQ chicken burrito and a Mexican Martini. To get you in the mood, they're also offering a drink special: $5 margaritas and $4 Corona bottles. Barrett's is located at 4171 N. Main St., Fall River.

Somerset's Piri Piri Kitchen is "super contento" it's Cinco de Mayo, spicing things up with some tasty deals to brighten anyone's day. On the menu, available all day Friday, there's $2 tacos (hard or soft), a Taco Box (which includes 20 tacos, chips and salsa, and churros), taco salad, birria tacos, birria taco flatbread pizza, chips and salsa and tequila lime shrimp, and for something sweet, try their churros. To guarantee you get your taco fix, pre-ordering large orders like the Taco Box is recommended. Some of these items will also be available on DoorDash. Piri Piri Kitchen is located at 970 County St.

Pickled Deli and Catering, 128 Slades Ferry Ave., Somerset, is celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a taco special on Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grab a container and build them the way you like them for $14.99.

Taco, but make it ice cream? Yes please! There are plenty of places to turn to for savory Mexican fare. If you're looking for something sweet, Ice 'N' Roll has you covered. The Fall River shop brought back its popular rolled ice cream taco in honor of Cinco de Mayo. And don't forget to try their frescas. One creation, called Sunset Paradise, mixes watermelon, pineapple, strawberry, lemon and lime into a tasty, refreshing drink. Ice 'N' Roll is located at 4263 North Main St.

You can also head to Eskimo King for their Cinco de Taco, a waffle cone taco shell filled with twist soft serve, hot fudge, chopped cherries, “lettuce” coconut, homemade brownie crumble and whipped cream. Eskimo King is located at 29 Market St., Swansea.

A popular summer seafood destination is also getting in on the Cinco de Mayo action. At Macray's, 115 Stafford Road in Tiverton, fiesta-worthy specials include a Tex-mex black bean soup and shredded beef-braised tacos with housemade fire roasted tomato salsa, chimichurri, lime sour cream, topped with cotija cheese (served with black beans and rice).

19 Prime Tapas (Fall River)

Feeling thirsty? How about a margarita, available for $5 (all flavors) this Friday at 19 Prime Tapas, 19 Jeremiah V. Sullivan Drive, Fall River. It pairs well with their tacos, nachos and quesadillas.

Fall River's Tequila Lime Cantina knows how to party. It'll be double the fun at the 197 Bank St. spot on Friday, May 5, as they combine their 10th anniversary and Mexican holiday festivities into one with Cinco de Mayo Fiesta 2023. The day will feature live music, prizes and food and drink specials from 11:30 a.m. until last call.

Roger's has some Cinco specials — Mexican street corn dip, smoked pulled chicken tacos and pineapple blueberry maragaritas — available through Saturday. Located at 1229 Wilbur Ave., Somerset.

Fall River-area Mexican must-trys

Couldn't wrap this list without a shoutout to some of the city's go-to spots for authentic Mexican cuisine.

At Taqueria El Habanero, 60 N. Main St., you can start your Cinco de Mayo off right with their Mexican breakfasts, from Huevos con Chorizo to Burrito el Ranchero. The downtown Fall River spot, and its menu, is small and unassuming but big on flavor. Try their traditional tacos - filled with chicken, steak, pulled pork, al pastor, chorizo, fish, or lengue (yes, that's tongue) - ranging from $2.25 to $2.99. They've also got quesadillas, burritos, tortas and a taco bowl. Wash it all down with some Jarritos, a popular Mexican soft drink.

A hop, skip and a jump away on South Main Street there's also the newly opened Origen Bar & Grill, with an array of Latin-focused offerings. For Cinco de Mayo, check out their chicken or steak nachos, Esquites (Mexican street corn salad), fajitas or Birria (a Mexican dish with shredded, slow-simmered beef, lettuce, tomato, onions, and mozzarella cheese, served with birria consome).

Origen Bar & Grill: New restaurant brings Latin American flavors to downtown Fall River

At the South End of the city, a growing, family-run chain is a popular stop for those craving Mexican cuisine. Fiesta Mexican Restaurant, 207 Rhode Island Ave., features all the classics, from tacos to chimichangas, fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, and quesadillas. Or try their new Monster Taco, authentic Tacos de Lengua or spicy pineapple margarita that they describe as "a tropical vacation in a glass." You can also find Fiesta fare at their new fast-casual taqueria location at 362 S. Main St., as well as another dine-in restaurant at 117 County St., Somerset.
