How to celebrate Día de los Niños, get free books in El Paso on Saturday

Día de los Niños, a holiday that started in Mexico, is now also a day that El Pasoans look forward to. It's a day to give some special love, attention and appreciation to the children in our lives. In Mexico, the day is usually celebrated on April 30.

In the Borderland, there usually are celebrations planned close to the end of April. The city of El Paso is making sure to celebrate children while also celebrating another tradition of giving books away with its Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros. And there are other events around the city. Take a look at these events happening near you.

Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros

The city's Public Libraries and the Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros, presented by the Great Khalid Foundation, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Washington Park.

The free, family-friendly festival that celebrates children's literacy and the outdoors is celebrating 27 years in the community. Children of all ages will be able to select free books to take home. There also will be a variety of activities, live entertainment, lucha libre, jumping balloons and superhero appearances.

Free parking will be available at the El Paso County Coliseum. Sun Metro will provide free bus rides throughout the day.

Glory Road Barber Shop to host Go’ Pokémon event

Kids of all ages are invited to celebrate Día de Los Niños at Glory Road Barber Shop’s first El Paso Generations Go’ Pokémon GO event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 140 Montecillo Blvd., Suite B3. It's a partnership with the El Paso Pokémon GO group (@eptxpkmngo on Twitter) and DeadBeach Brewery.

The free event will have more than 25 local vendors and food trucks, Boba Tea by Teapioca El Paso, Star Burgers and Fries, and Con Amor By Bere. Guests 21 and older also will be able to enjoy beer courtesy of DeadBeach Brewery. Kids who attend the event and receive a haircut from Glory Road Barber Shop will receive free Pokégoodies. Make sure to book your appointment online in advance for a secured spot.

Guests also will be able to enjoy activities like chalk art, coloring stations, hourly raffles, a kids cosplay contest, and featured artwork from local artist Blanca Estrada, aka Bloo.
