The annual Trek the Trestle Walk is back for Labor Day.

The community walk has been going on for 15 years, only pausing briefly in 2020. The event is free and does not require registration. St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Marketing Specialist Jennifer Catanzaro said the walk is a nice way to get out with the community.

"Join the community for the walk and see the trestle," she said. "That's really the highlight of the walk, too."

The Trek the Trestle walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Labor Day. The walk will start at the Avoca Trailhead on M-136. From there, participates will walk 2 1/2 miles up to the Imlay City Trailhead where they will cross the Mill Creek Trestle. After that, participants will turn around and walk back to the Avoca Trailhead.

The walk's route is 5 miles in total. Event information and directions to the route's starting point can be found on the event's Facebook page.

Although registration is not required, Catanzaro said the Parks and Recreation Department asked participants to sign in so that it knows how many people came. She said the department expects between 100 and 150 people to show up for the walk.

Catanzaro said the walk is like St. Clair County's local version of the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk.

After the walk, participants can enjoy a lunch of all Michigan made products such as Koegel's Hot Dogs, Better Made Snacks and Faygo. Lunch is available by donation and all proceeds go to United Way of St. Clair County.
