·3 min read

Happy New Year's Eve, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today.

First, today's weather:

Cool with clouds and sun. High: 58 Low: 48.

Sunrise Friday is at 6:56 a.m. and sunset is at 4:54 p.m.

A coastal no swim advisory is in place along the Orange County beaches.

Here are the top stories today in Laguna Beach:

  1. A house fire in Laguna Beach has become a cautionary tale for the city, reminding residents to prepare their homes for fire safety. While no one was injured in the Wednesday morning house fire on 2300 block of Temple Hills Drive, Laguna Beach officials took the incident as an opportunity to remind residents of the importance of fire safety and working smoke alarms. (Laguna Beach Patch).

  2. What's open and closed this New Year's Day in Orange County? Certain grocery chains are open while the majority will be closed for the holiday. As a federal holiday since 1885, all "non-essential" federal offices are closed. To learn more about which businesses are open and closed in your city, click through to the article. (Laguna Beach Patch).

  3. Mudslides, debris flows and flooding were the stories of the day Thursday after heavy rains struck the southland overnight. In Laguna Beach, the city underwent massive preparations in advance of the storm. Soft road closures were to be expected at canyon entrances, and many roadways were open to residents only, the Orange County Sheriff's Department advised. (Laguna Beach Patch).

  4. Fifty years ago, Laguna Beach city officials decided to not move forward with destroying the iconic Laguna Beach lifeguard tower. This new year, one Laguna Beach resident has taken it upon herself to celebrate the tower's lasting significance, fifty years after it was almost demolished and replaced with a more modern facility.
