Celebrate over 50 years of seniors gathering at Friendship Centers
PETOSKEY — Friendship Centers of Emmet County is celebrating togetherness this summer, bringing the community together and helping seniors reconnect with friends. In addition to enrichment activities, field trips, historical tours, and daily fitness, the Council on Aging is planning a car show with a barbecue luncheon, a senior celebration, and the Senior Health Expo.
The public, regardless of age, is invited to the car show and luncheon on Wednesday, July 20 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Petoskey Friendship Center, 1322 Anderson Road. Come check out the cool cars and grab lunch on the patio. The menu includes burgers, beans, chips, fruit, and bottled water. The cost is a minimum suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and over, and a minimum donation of $5 per person for guests under age 60.
The center is still accepting entry of classic cars owned by seniors. If you have a special car you would like to display during the event, contact the enrichment director Lynn at lynn@emmetcoa.org or (231) 347-3211, ext. 119. Registration is free and owners will receive one free lunch per vehicle.
A senior celebration, for those age 60 and older, takes place at the Huber Senior Center, 6436 E. Brutus Road, Brutus, Michigan on Tuesday, July 26 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Listen to music from Brad Hersey, a local favorite, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Harbor Lights Food Truck will be serving lunch from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The menu options are fish sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and grilled chicken sandwich. Meals will be served with French fries, a beverage, and dessert. The suggested minimum donation is $3 per meal for those aged 60 and older. Seating will be available indoors and outdoors on the patio. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie of friends, old and new.
Friendship Centers is also excited to bring back the Senior Health Expo. This one-day event will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the gymnasium of the Petoskey High School. The Senior Health Expo features products and services for seniors and their families and offers health and safety information. Free services including blood pressure screenings, hearing aid cleanings, and more will be offered. Many booths will also offer free samples and giveaways or door prizes. Founded in 1967 as a place for Northern Michigan senior citizens to socialize and participate in group activities, services now provided by Friendship Centers of Emmet County include transportation, congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, in-home supportive services, fitness, health services, support groups, and a retired senior volunteer program. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to ensure that all senior citizens have the opportunities, information, and services necessary to live healthy, safe, and active lives in dignity.
