In a British publishing house, a book about Ukrainian artists will be released in the renowned World of Art series, focusing on the history of global art by Thames and Hudson.

The Art of Ukraine, authored by Ukrainian journalist, curator, and art critic Alisa Lozhkina, is set to be part of the prominent World of Art series. Alisa Lozhkina shared the news on Facebook, revealing her two-year effort on this project.

“Ten years ago, I was thrilled to discover Serhiy Bratkov’s name in a similar book on contemporary photography,” said Lozhkina.

“It was a significant moment — our author finally ‘there.’ Unfortunately, ‘here’ and ‘there’ had long haunted Ukrainian art internationally. We were invisible margins, representatives of an uninteresting periphery, always needing to prove our worth. Somehow, in the 2010s, this hurt me deeply,” she wrote.

Lozhkina explained that The Art in Ukraine is based on her book “Permanent Revolution.” She proposed the manuscript to the British publisher Thames and Hudson, which approached her to contribute two chapters to the book “Treasures of Ukraine.” Series editor Roger Thorp of World of Art series expressed interest in her work.

In her post, Alisa Lozhkina expressed gratitude to all the artists, collectors, and museum professionals who contributed to the book.

The book’s cover features a fragment of the artwork “Dusting” from the series “Pylary” (1929) by Ukrainian artist Oleksandr Bohomazov from the collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine.

The English translation was done by Nathan Jeffers, and the scientific editor was Dr. Roman Ivashkiv from the University of Urbana-Champaign in Illinois. Maxym Bilous, the book’s photo editor, worked on coordinating the illustrative material while being on the front lines with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“I am very proud of Maxym and all the heroes defending Ukraine today,” said Lozhkina.

“Without them, this would be impossible, although I understand how little books matter to those who face death every day. Nevertheless, a book, as I was taught in childhood, is also a weapon. So, I hope our efforts are not in vain, and I am glad that more people will now have the opportunity to learn about Ukrainian art.”
