Celebration of Life service planned for 17-year-old Sherborn girl killed in boat crash off Cape Cod
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday for Sadie Mauro, a Dover-Sherborn High School senior who was killed in a boating crash off Cape Cod.
The 17-year-old Sherborn resident was one of six passengers aboard a boat that struck a jetty off Cold Storage Beach around 9 p.m. on Friday, July 21. Dive teams recovered her body hours later.
The service honoring her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 11 Washington St., Sherborn, according to her obituary. The service will be livestreamed at the church website.
Mauro, a former resident of Shelburne, Vermont, was a star lacrosse player at Dover-Sherborn High and had committed to playing lacrosse at Gettysburg College next year.
“To those that knew her, Sadie was a true light, and lived every day in full. Family and laughter, friends and sport, animals, and the outdoors, that was what she loved,” her obituary states. “She was born with a nature and wisdom beyond her years that allowed her to live a full life that felt far longer than her time here.”
“Confident, warm, and empathetic in all she did, and to all she met, our lives will always be better and brighter because of her example,” her obituary states.
Dover-Sherborn High School Principal John Smith remembered Mauro as “a hardworking student and great athlete.”
“Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit,” Smith said in her obituary. “She had such a strong sense of self and had a love for adventure and anything outdoors. A hardworking student and great athlete, Sadie was genuine and effortlessly kind.”
Leslie Frank of Massachusetts Elite Lacrosse echoed his comments.
“She just had that kind of glow and ease about her… Always happy,” Frank said in her obituary. “You felt like she was a personality you could trust anything you had in her care.”
Relatives, friends and community members are invited to attend Friday’s memorial service.
“Casual summer attire please, as Sadie loved this season so much,” her obituary states. Donations in Sadie’s honor can be made to Harlem Lacrosse’s Sadie Mauro Memorial Fund.
A teenage boy was also taken to Cape Cod Hospital with a head laceration following Friday’s deadly boating crash.
A preliminary investigation found that the vessel was equipped with two outboard 250-horsepower engines bearing an Alabama registration, according to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office. State Police and Environmental Police teams conducted dive operations at the crash site on Saturday in an effort to recover debris from the boat.
State Police have not said whether any charges will be filed in connection with the fatal crash.
